In this economy, FA is often given to already enrolled families who now have "new need" before it can trickle down to families entering for the first time. Schools know they will have to continue helping these new families for all 4 years so they first want to help established students finish before taking on new people.

Wow. I didn't know financial aid HAD a bad rap. We are new to the PK application process and feeling very naive. Should we feel bad about applying to schools that we love? Is this a shameful thing? Should we just stick to the ones we can afford (public)?

I kind of thought schools prided themselves in diversity (economic, ethnic, etc) and actually the FA students are serving the school by fulfilling the need for balance But I guess they are ingrates looking for a free ride?

I thought being around a range of other kids better prepares one for the world....

Face it, these schools say they provide diversity. Most parents look for that because they do not want their kid to grow up in a bubble that is soo obsessed with money. The bubble the school provides is very very obsessed with money.
The FA kids are there because by offering discounts on tuition, they are able to still make some money instead of no-money. There just are not enough kids to fill in the classes at full price, even if there were, the school would then not be offering diversity any more. Either way, these schools are not poor.

Are you kidding? IMF, World Bank, etc. are filled with families from around the world tying to get their kids into the top tier schools.

PP 09:54 did you happen to watch Waiting for Superman? I applaud the parents out there who are trying to find a way for their children to succeed and rising above the mentality that I can't afford it so I guess my child will have to receive, in alot of cases, a subpar education. Of course there are people who try to beat the system, but that's not going to prevent me from giving. Perhaps our collective giving can change the course of a child's life. To me, that supercedes all of the parents out there that are "beaters."

Bottom line is that you are living your desired lifestyle and giving your child a great education. You are able to do these things not only because of your own ability and wherewithal, but also because of the generosity of someone else. No need to kiss ass, but it is probably a good idea to show some humility – you are not doing this by yourself.

I donate services to the scholarship fund silent auction and I continue to do so because I believe it is the right thing to do. But to hear someone who benefits from such generosity have a chip on her shoulder is a buzz-kill!

Actually, universities do solicit donations from PARENTS of current students, not from the students, and private secondary schools do the same.

I hope the nasty poster does not hurt contributions for those who truly need aid. Unfortunately, for most things/programs, there are always a few people who will abuse the system, but I do believe the goal of providing FA is important and that most students who recieve aid are deserving.

The analogy to universities is flawed. A university isn't pressuring me to donate to the scholarship fund while I am still a student. They wait until I am an alum to hit me up. So yes there is a big difference between asking people who are currently paying full freight to subsidize another student.
