I've had no babies and it's the most painful thing I have ever experienced. Worse than the cryotherapy to freeze bad cells. My body went into shock. Sweats, dizziness.

Call your doctor. I had sharp pains after that did not feel like cramps and it was because the IUD had perforated my uterus and was scraping against my intestines. Call your doctor and insist on being seen.

What you describe is normal side effects. You can get it removed or wait it out. I'm the 4/15 8:04 poster; got mine on Wednesday morning. I've noticed the cramps are best controlled with midol.


I didn't find the placement to be all that painful. I took a deep breath and exhaled when she was doing something painful. It's almost impossible to tense up whole doing that.

Just got mine done at 1030 this morning and I wanted to jump off the table and run as fast as I could. I've had one baby, c section, and the pains of them measuring and inserting were almost as bad as the recovery from the c section. i'm sitting at work now with my pants undone and bent over with horrible cramps! i want to cry! never would i do this again!

Okay, I just got Mirena put in for the first time at Planned Parenthood. They did a great job making sure I was aware of the risks/side effects, and the nurse explained what she was doing as it was happening (this always makes me feel better, because it feels less like random uncomfortable poking around in my vagina).

In terms of pain: 5/10 for about 10 seconds. TOTALLY DOABLE. The rest was fine. I started bleeding during the insertion so the nurse was watching that for a second, but I stopped bleeding and now life is good. I took a motrin beforehand, and I was really calm when I went in, so those helped. I'm 21, average weight, I've never been pregnant, and I'm not on my period/ovulating.

At it's worst, the pain was like an especially nasty period cramp. Nothing worth dreading.

I have a lot of empathy for people who have a lot of pain from this though. Because on top of the pain it's embarrassing to react strongly (at least for me it has been with other procedures), so you feel like a wimp even though it says nothing about your character.

To anyone reading this thread while considering an IUD, I'm going to say this: If you think this is the best birth control method for you, don't be stopped by fear of insertion pain. For some people it doesn't hurt at all, for others it hurts like hell. Go prepared for some pain, but don't panic about it because you have no idea whether or not you'll be one of the lucky people who gets excruciating pain.

Keep in mind though, I'm only talking about insertion, because that's where I'm at. Right now I'm having some cramps and bleeding, but nothing that will keep me up at night.

I thought removal was more painful than insertion. Colposcopy and cervical biopsy was much more painful.

It all depends. If you have had a child, my doctor said it wont be as painful. I had mine done yesterday. I have never had a child and it was the WORST pain I have ever been in. I screamed and cried the whole entire time. As a matter of fact, I had to hold the nurses hand. The pain lasted a good 15-20 minutes. From what the nurse and doctor told me, I did better than most people do (which I could not believe- I was ready to kick him if he didn't stop for a few minutes during the procedure to give me a break from the pain). I was given pain medication before the procedure, which did not work. I felt everything. The pain was so bad I almost threw up. Cramping began immediately after it was put in. The cramping was terrible as well. I spent the whole day in bed. Today is day 2 with it in. Most of the pain is gone. I have cramping on and off. When it does cramp, its bad. But it only lasts a few minutes at a time. I am spotting. Spotting on the first day was worst than it is today. But im not exaggerating, the pain was unbearable.

Excruciating! But I had two c-sections and my cervix never dilated with either pregnancies.

You can hv general anesthesia. I know because after my painful failed attempt my doc suggested it.

And the tho woman asking the difference, it's hormones. The cool can't be used for some ppl like myself because the hormones cause me to produce liver tumors. I have already removed one

Just like labor contractions. Had to use my natural birth coping skills. It was tough but no regrets. Mirena had made my life a lot easier.
