Ok and not all have the same preference. some really like being in a quaint village in a beautiful setting near nature for 4 years. when are they going to get that experience again?

No one dreams of going to school in Worcester, MA.

Interesting. I looked it up and here's the full list of top 50 "smartest" student colleges. Note: it's from 2015, I guess Middlebury just fell outside the top 50, and is at 51.

No, some of the LACs that are actually close to a city are:
Barnard (in NYC)
Swarthmore (30 minutes to Philly)
Wellesley (30 minutes to Boston)
Reed (30 minutes from Portland)
Macalester (in St. Paul/Minn)
Oxy (in LA, not an 1hr+ like Claremont gang)
Oberlin (30 minutes from Cleveland)
Wes is a few hours away from NYC or Boston ... not close to a city IMO.
Pretty sure that Hartford is a city.

If you compare the most recent CDS, you'll see that Middlebury's standardized test scores are very similar to those of schools like Bowdoin.
2025-26 CDS
Bowdoin:
34.76% submitting SAT, 17.28% submitting ACT
SAT 25/50/75: 1470-1510-1540
ACT: 33-34-35
Middlebury:
33% submitting SAT, 16% submitting ACT
SAT 25/50/75: 1460-1500-1530
ACT: 33-34-35
Based on the most recently available IPEDS information, Middlebury's SAT profile isn't quite as robust as that of Colby, however.
