Darryl Hannah is interesting because I think she really didn't need JFK, Jr. She was an A-Lister (Splash had already come out), she had her own activist causes, and she also grew up extremely wealthy. She wasn't someone who was interested in social climbing, she was born rich and was a big star in her own right.
Both Darryl's biological father (who owned a shipping/boat company) and her stepfather (real estate tycoon) were educated and wealthy, though her stepfather was even more wealthy.
The show portrays her as incredibly needy, narcissistic, shallow, and kind of stupid. No idea if that's realistic or not, but it's a brutal depiction. Watching it, I could not wait for John to dump her because I found her so grating.
All the Daryl stuff around Jackie's funeral was really obnoxious to watch. Daryl showing up uninvited and telling John that the public "needed" to see them together, and then coming out on the balcony with him (again uninvited) and grabbing his hand when it was clear he didn't want to? I hope these are made up details they added to try and make John and Carolyn's relationship feel more destined and inevitable than it was. Though in that case, they really did Daryl Hannah dirty! She's still alive! I bet Johns' other exes were happy not to show up in this thing.
No, they portrayed her as clueless and not on his wavelength. I didn’t get narcissist at all

The show does not depict Darryl in the best light. She refutes she made JKK Jr. bring the dog’s ashes and drugs.

+1. I wonder if it’s an age thing. People seem crazier for her than after she got married.

She was chic, but not that chic. She was pretty and there were lots of beautiful chic women in NYC.
The fascination with her is because she died in a tragic plane crash that shouldn’t have happened. He was just stupid and reckless.
You literally don’t know what you’re talking about. I’m in NYC with fashion connections.

Yes, wish he would have stayed with her.

I've never seen any reports that Sargent cheated on her, and they were married for almost 60 years (until Eunice died). Their corner of the family was also the one most dedicated to public service, inspired by Eunice's close relationship with her sister Rosemary, who had an intellectual disability and was also given a lobotomy as treatment. What the Shriver's did with the Special Olympics is the kind of truly meaningful legacy that a lot of rich people claim to want but very few ever actually produce. The only similar example I can think of is the Carters and Habitat for Humanity. But the Carters were not born wealthy -- Jimmy's family was essentially middle class, but in a very poor area.
One reason I found it so sad when everything came out about Schwarzenegger is that I really feel like Maria and the other Shriver kids/grandkids are among the most functional of the whole Kennedy clan, and it was really sad to see more of that dysfunction in that side of the family. As someone from a large and sprawling, and dysfunctional, family, I guess I'd been inspired by what Eunice and Sargent did and was sad when Maria's family wound up with some of the same problems that plagued many of her cousins, aunts, and uncles.
Because of her family background (and her own successes), Maria Shriver unfortunately was a target for a social climber and a narcissist like Schwarzenegger.
