I have southern folks in my neighborhood. They were originally from Alabama. Sweet and nice UNTIL they aren't. During COVID, they would make snide comments and tell other kids not to play with my kid because we went to Kenya. Last week while shoveling off snowcrete and getting my car unstuck in my HOA community parking, they came out and yelled because I put snowcrete on the road. First question, where did all this snow come from. Second question, you are going to clean it up right! This epitomes the SOUTH for you. They act all nice until they get in your business and treat you like sub-human. SCREW THE SOUTH!

Sure, there is historical context, but even Cecil County (whee I lived for my first 13 years) didn't hold tight to its "southern" roots. There were still racists there, (including idiot KKK guy) but they were already more Philly suburb than being southern when I lived there.

And most people in DE live in Northern DE, which is very Philly/Jersey and of course contains UD. Slower DE is rural, sure. But I have never ever heard DE referred to as "southern" in the modern era.

I now live in NoVA, which doesn't feel "southern" at all! Yes, I am well aware of the history. The battlefields and historic markers are there, I know. But NoVA current culture has nothing in common with the rest of "the south"

Again, not arguing about the historical reasoning. Just that the current dynamics are so very different. The divides in the states are between urban and rural, and obviously the urban numbers win out.


US Census classifies VA, DC, and MD as the south (“southern region” to be exact). So it’s not exactly a historical take - you objectively live in the south.


Does it? Not the MidAtlantic region? Interesting. Either way, as a Black person who came here from farther down South, DC itself isn't very Southern, to me, but 20 mins outside either way very much does.
