They don't require it.
They might recommend it.
Ned Williams, the former headmaster, who had a Doctorate from Harvard in Education, believed that being older had academic and social benefits for boys.
It also has huge benefits for the boys in athletics, which is the reason why many MD families reclass their boys. The school historically is very permissive there too.
I heard they won't admit kids who are May-Aug birthdays unless they reclass. May just be rumor though
They don't call it Mater Delay for nothing.
Oh wow is this true? My son has played a team from Mater Dei in basketball through City of Rockville, which goes by grade level (elementary school age) a couple of times and we were joking the kids looked two years older than any other team. So maybe they actually are? I wonder if they realize they are ridiculous putting kids a year against an 8 year old, or whatever.

Anonymous wrote:Why do they care so much about excelling at sports? I understand the value in sports for exercise and learning about teamwork etc. but who cares about winning at middle school sports? So few will be college athletes or beyond. So why care about it beyond just the experience… to the point of holding kids back academically
