Avoid Mater Amoris for middle school (7th and 8th)—they have had many issues trying to grow despite what they will tell you on the tour. Very few kids are rising up from 6th to continue in the middle school program, and some of the current kids are leaving.


Agree. Mater Amoris is NOT progressive. The parent community is awful and rampant bullying due to entitlement issues instilled in kids by families

I think St Anselm’s Abbey School has a few open spots in the middle school. Definitely worth inquiring if the school appeals to you. It’s a fellow PVAC member and pulls from all over the DMV.

They also have a few open spaces in upper school left (As there have been a few students who applied in April and were accepted).

A few schools mentioned here are known to be in as precarious a financial position as Sandy Springs itself. For sure, attracting enough new full-pay students from SSFS might help them to stabilize, even if temporarily. Do your due diligence. Schools can't support themselves on tuition alone. Ask about the size of the endowment, debt, the annual giving program, and auxiliary income. How many students are receiving financial aid? A school that has to discount tuition for more than a third of their students is untenable.

Wow. Every school doesn’t need to be this wealthy.

The Sycamore School in Rosslyn (5-12) is another supportive, inclusive community still accepting students for next year. They will have a representative at the open house fair at SSFS this week.

Their 990s are all on file. Very carefully managed school.

Definitely look at Christ Episcopal. Our daughter was a "lifer" (K-8) and the school is exceptional, both academically and as a community.
