I did not think they counted as snow days but wondered if they might count as partial snow days. Only because I know they "built in 10 days" are based on instructional hours and now an actual extra 10 days beyond what is required. I also would not say winter is almost over. Historically we have had more snow in February and March than in December and January.

2 hour Delays and Early Release do not count towards any snow days. I think that is why you see them (obviously 2 hour delays) used so liberally - because you do not have to make them up.

I think the best case for tomorrow is they schedule a planned 2 hour early release - then the day counts. I'm sure activities after 4pm or something like that will be cancelled. If the projection is an 11-1 storm start time, we at least get the school day in.

No chance of a go on time yet the call for an early release comes mid day - that is an absolute disaster transportation-wise.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but I thought FCPS went by instructional hours, not instructional days. Therefore every delayed opening and early release does count against the “snow day” totals, but as increments of hours, not finite days. That’s why elementary schools technically have less snow days, because of the 3 hour early releases baked in this year.

Start time Tuesday on the computer models is ~1pm. That's a tough call. Snow likely won't accumulate much on pavement at first -- temps will likely be slightly above freezing at the start and you're also fighting the midday sun angle. Roads will likely be just wet at school dismissal times. But also can't say that with anything close to 100% confidence.

Models are also showing possible freezing rain overnight Weds into Thurs. Temps will again be marginal. But Thursday may also be a closure. (Weds is an almost guaranteed closure.)

It is going to be 35 degrees at 6 am on Thursday and going up to 51! Also, it will rain overnight and early morning, getting rid of the snow. Thursday open on time.

Wish they could just do early release on Tuesday instead of no school but I am guessing it will be closed completely and it won't even start sticking until everyone is home.

I’ll be shocked if school’s open Thursday.
