No, the majority of faculty from HYP want to work at R1 universities not SLACs.

That does seem surprising. I just looked at the math faculty for my kid's midrange LAC that is far less selective than Bowdoin and most of them got PhDs at Cornell or Brown. A couple others at the state's flagship.
Pretty snobby attitude. Maybe the guy is a standout in his particular niche.

They should hire the best in their field. HYP doesn't necessarily have the best talent in every area. Rutgers for example apparently has a leading graduate philosophy program.
