While height will obviously vary, OP’s concern is very much valid.

A 5’3” man would be in the 1st percentile for height (with 99% of men taller than he is). The very extreme end of the scale. Meanwhile, both parents’ heights (5’3” & 5’8”) are in the 35th-40th percentiles.

Unless there are other very short people in the extended families, a 5’3” son would be a very unusual outcome.

I’d definitely get a second opinion.

Right. In most cases (unless you have achondroplasia or Marfan syndrome or whatnot), many genes determine height. Say dad has 5 tall genes and 1 short gene and mom has 3 tall genes and 3 short genes, then dad is tall and mom is average height. But different kids may inherit different combos of genes. In reality there are thousands (or more) of genetic variants linked to height.

If you read The Genetic Lottery there's a discussion of a former NBA player who was really tall (I think close to 7 feet.) Both parents were tall but neither was that tall (percentile-wise, since men are about 4-5 inches taller than women on average), but he and his parents got sequenced and basically it turned out that he inherited most of the tall genetic variants from both parents, moving him further right on the height distribution. Obviously, something similar can happen in the other direction.

I’m the 5’4 & 1/2” runt. Sister 5’9”. Mother 5’6”. Brother 6’2”. Dad 6’2”. All 8 of my girl cousins are 5’10-5’11”. Both grandfathers 6’1”.

I married a 5’10” man. My oldest was 5’4” at 14. 5’11” at 18 and now 6’0” just turned 19. He was predicted based on toddler stats to be 6’2”. My brother grew 2 inches in college so I think it might play out.

My younger son was 5’3” at 14. He’s 16 and 5’8” with a lot of growing —baby face. He has a heel xray for Severs at age 14 and growth plates in ankle were open. I think he will be at least 5’10”, but he’s definitely had delayed growth and could end up taller than brother.

Meanwhile my 53-year old husband has lost 2 inches. He was a heavy weight lifter and I swear it’s part of the reason.

+1. Haven’t you ever seen families where there are two full siblings. One looks exactly like mom (face and body type) and one looks exactly like dad? And the siblings look nothing alike whatsoever.

It was dead on accurate for DD16. DS14 is 2" shorter than his predicted height but his growth plates are still open so I think he'll reach that.

My dad is 6'3" and my mom is 5'. I ended up 5'6" and my brother is 6'1". My DH is 5'9.5" and DS15 is the same height as him and DD13 is 5'5", DD10 is 5'.

Anything can happen, really. Even w/ your DH's genes, his mom is petite so that's in there...

My daughter is 5’4.5”
