Private businesses don't get paid if they close. MCPS got MORE money when they shut down school buildings during the pandemic.

This is the very, very least the BoE and superintendent can do. We should build-in 4 or 5 days to the calendar. And we should identify make-up days during the year that we're actually willing to use. It's ridiculous that we have make-up days identified in the calendar that we're told we can't use.

The problem is, what happens if they aren’t used, do you end the year early? Because then you end up with parents upset that they don’t have camps or childcare lined up for those days.

You don't get it. If there are no snow days, you still have school on those days. It's ok to have a few more school days than the absolute bare minimum required by law.

Then we do not want to hear ANY teachers or staff complain when they take away your “professional day” on 1/29.

Who crawled up your arse? Why use quotes? I guess the students don’t need second quarter grades on their report cards, because that is the day for that to be done.

FCPS was also closed tomorrow due to snow.

How snow is handled says a lot about public sector (schools shut down for three days) and private (managed to get snow cleared quickly, open for business).

No

What's the better day?

I'm betting they choose June 6.

+1 1/29 is Lunar New Year. Not going to be a make up day. Extend the school year.

Will Asian American parents really push back though?

This Asian parent couldn't care less about Lunar New Year.

Me also. Celebrating it seems more like a gesture here. I lived in a very Asian US city before here and it is also more of a gesture there too.

But we do. And that's reasonable, given that we know its going to snow in the winter. It was obvious that 2 built-in days wasn't going to be enough.

Under current state law, we have to use 3 make-up days before we can even ask for a waiver.

Only if they don't have an Asian principal.

The decision isn’t made by principals.

I'm starting to think that no decisions are made by principals.

This is more reason to make the make-up day selection process automatic. Let nature pick the specific day so the board can't be accused of picking favorites among religions and ethnic groups.
