We will live in blue states and blue cities. I hold out hope that enough republicans value the constitution that there might actually be a line they draw. Maybe.

No amount of warning and trying to protect them from themselves has ever seemed to work. They just need to learn things the hard way.
FA/FO.
This.
And MAGA is more interested in upsetting libs and Feds than in solving the problems they have whined incessantly about for umpteen years. All of which makes it unlikely that they will accomplish much except deportations and massive inflation.

My plan now is to just sit back and watch (sometimes with popcorn) - at least when I feel like tuning in. Since this is a DC based board I assume many of you, like me, understand and have concerns about the democratic norms he upends and the disruption he brings and you do not take our system of government for granted. But at this point it seems the American people - or about half of them - want this disruption.
My state of mind is to focus on what is right in front of me - family, friends and local community. I will watch with detached interest what public administration reforms, to put it lightly, these next 4 years will bring. What I won't do is freak out, get upset, or worry about every outrageous thing he says or does because in a way that is what drives his power. Plus, I don't want to.
Thoughts?
Sitting back is not an effective way to get what you want. I would start to take a look at 2026 and see if there are seats in Congress that can be flipped. How do we get a winning coalition to get out and vote?
This. But, yes I agree that even in DCUM the trolls hate when you say “okay” because they want a reaction, so let’s not give the soon to be felon-in-chief our attention. Hopefully the media will get this message.
The irony is that the media helped usher Trump back in because he's so good for clicks and eyeballs, and here we all are checking out. It feels good to retire from all this.
Agree. But give them fewer eyeballs. Apple News is excellent for this. Dropped NYT and the Post. Rolling Stone has great political coverage.

This. OP, I agree that this time around I will no longer freak out or worry and I also plan to sit back and enjoy the shitshow that is coming (because FAFO), but I am also going to focus on the next elections. As we pivot more to state rights, now more than ever we should all be paying more attention to our state politicians. In Virginia where I live, next year (November 2025) we will elect a Governor, Lt. Governor, and an AG. These positions can have a larger impact on our lives than those of politicians at the national level. AGs from blue states, for example, fought efforts to overturn the ACA. Don't just give up, OP. Get involved.

My broader concern is...what happens when they crash the economy, when debt is piled higher, when the dollar is replaced with crypto.
That impacts everyone. And if Trump decides "meh, I hereby proclaim the US no longer will service the debt owned by China" - then what?
We are merely passengers on this train. There is nothing we can to do to prevent the derailment. Buckle up and hope to survive. F everyone else.
This. We are all in the "find out" stage together now. Most of us will just need to hunker down and make sure we have enough money to feed our family and keep the heat on during the next four years.
Yep.
Hand-wringing, crying big baby tears, talking about how unfair it is -- all that doesn't do jack squat. It's actually much easier, because if we had all the levers taken away, we can't use any levers to try to mitigate this. No reason to go through anything emotional if the story is already written anyway.
So, what's actually going to happen? Your guess is as good as mine. Trump has a mandate. Dems were stripped of the effective ways to resist that, so now we don't have to resist. Might as well eat popcorn and work in the garden, or take your kids to a movie, or whatever.
This isn't our show, right? So be it.
This explains my calm this time, thank you. I couldn’t understand why I’m not panicking. America is about to change for generations and not for the better. I am going to suffer and likely die earlier because of it. I just hope my children don’t suffer too.
