Refers to the DoJ Civil Division’s "Denaturalization Section." Its current mandate is to go after specific groups of naturalized citizens who have offended morality by breaking certain laws, etc. But of course there are some Haitian immigrants in Ohio who would love to educate you on whether Trump's targeted spray is really that targeted, or that accurate. In a new order with no guardrails, the DoJ could be directed to go against any group. Who is going to stop that mandate?

As an naturalized citizen I am very familiar with this. There was a section on being a member of the communist party and similar.

See, people who haven't lived under an authoritarian regime have no clue.

They will make it happen. They will make you a communist and kick you out.

And even people who have read about authoritarian regimes understand how it works.

I am one of the PPs and, if such thing existed, I would have a "doctorate in living under an authoritarian regime". You know, one where people are actually killed for their political views. You are whipping yourself into a frenzy precisely because you have no idea what authoritarian regime looks like. You have convinced yourself that you live in extremely dangerous times while in fact you are extremely privileged in your safety.

But that doesn't matter. Please stop scaring people who are already very scared (people who didn't vote for Trump, clearly). They gain nothing from it.

You should stop being so condescending. Trump is a wrecking ball and he hasn’t even been inaugurated. No one is saying this will happen today; Biden is certainly not going to implement such policies. Trump and his sycophants promised revenge and a dictatorship. Maybe it won’t come to pass, but unwise for people to behave the way too many Jews did in Austria and Germany when Hitler came to power and assume that everything will stay the same. If you truly lived under an authoritarian regime, you should understand better than most how quickly things can change.

You're assuming that our civil structure, including the laws and the Constitution on which they are based, will continue to protect our political privilege. But the Supreme Court has taken steps that would have been unheard of in the past--in fact, Nixon would have never had to resign if we had the same court then that we do now. I heard on the radio the House is already setting up a formal investigation of Jack Smith.

Did you gain citizenship by something illegal if not then you are ok.

The govt absolutely can revoke citizenship of a naturalized citizen. One reason is if you lied in the process of immigrating and becoming a citizen. The other way is to belong to a subversive group or refuse to testify to Congress about your activities involving subversive groups. Trump wants to deport "pro-Hamas" people (it's in his platform), which could entail him deciding what constitutes being pro-Hamas, and we've gotten some sense of what Trump would consider being pro-Hamas. Read up on the McCarthy era to get an idea (the gov of Texas at the time floated the idea of applying the death penalty to any member of the Communist party).

I find the argument about Hitler really fascinating. We only call him Hitler because we know the end of the story. In the beginning he wasn't "Hitler," he was just a loser who wanted to grab power because he was a failed artist.

Stephen Miller is horrible xenophobe but he hasn't proposed taking away citizenship from naturalized citizens.

Who do you think is being "denaturalized," if not naturalized citizens? The Great Barrier Reef? Holstein cows?

Nobody. On paper (which is the law on the books today as it was 50 years ago) they will denaturalize former members of communist parties who lied about it. In reality, in the next 4 years, there will fewer than 50 people in the USA who are denaturalized and it will be because they broke laws before the got their citizenship, lied on their applications, clerical error and similar.

Interesting. But here’s the thing if you do away with rule of law and an impartial judiciary and allow law enforcement to act with impunity, it really doesn’t matter what’s “on the books”. Being a communist is whatever someone who isn’t loyal is doing.

If things are that bad, the pretext of denaturalization is entirely unnecessary.

But that’s how authoritarian regimes work. There is always a colorable argument that they are “just enforcing the laws”.

A lot of times people don't really want to know. Give them some pretext, or confuse them about whether a specific part of the government is 70 years old or just 4 years old, or just flat out lie that it isn't happening, and they will do your work for you.
