I actually thought it was Benji (what a stupid name!) all along because he was so creepy and odd. Not a fan of the actor. Eve Hewson is always good. Love Meghann Fahy - first time I ever saw her was in White Lotus and I thought she was fantastic. Dakota Fanning was good I thought. NK also good but the accent was terrible. LS was meh and I usually love him.
NK’s Australian accent was terrible? She’s Australian…
Um... she wasn't speaking in her Australian accent. It was supposed to be British but kept lapsing into some other kind of accent, maybe "continental." Very distracting.

So are all the tertiary characters -- the weird French "family friend" seducing one of the sons, the detective with the hangdog face acting as a foil for the rich sophisticates, all the drama at the book launch. It's not meant to be a serious drama.
That said I found it only so-so. I think Schreiber was the problem -- his face doesn't read as broad enough for this kind of humor and he wound up being a lynchpin. I thought Fanning was doing some good work and yet it also didn't really feel like it fit the tone of the show.
I will say that I am glad Kidman seems to have either found a better derm or surgeon or decided to lay off a bit. The last two things I saw her in she was looking inhuman and she looked better in this one. Also a relief to see her playing the mother of adult children instead of toddlers which makes so much more sense and allowed her to play to her strengths as an actress a lot more.
This is a good analysis. I’m in the group of not liking the show, and agree with you it was because of the attempted campy aspects, but I enjoy a good campy show from time to time - this missed the mark. Campy needs some over the top exaggerations, such that you almost could imagine the actors cracking up on set when “cut” is yelled. This was just bad acting and writing.

Not that the book is a masterpiece, lol, but they added a bunch of unnecessary things (NK’s brother and NK’s scandalous past; third brother and trust that is available after youngest turns 18). They also totally changed the ending. Those who adapted it for the screen said they wanted an intentional ending. They could have gotten that but closer to what the book had. It just felt really busy and hurried by the last episode.
The crazy NK brother thing was bizarre.
Can someone remind me of the book ending?
What was the twist in the book if the 3rd brother/trust was added? That was the whole
Premise Of the murder in the show?
