8 is a 14 of non vanity sizes.

No it is not. I also have size 8 clothes from 20 years ago and they still fit.

So…from 2004? I have vintage wool skirt suits from the 1960s. They are size 8s and have a 26” waist. That is not vanity sizing. I generally wear a modern size 2.

Yeah…most vintage patterns only go down to size 6. When I compare measurement equivalents, that’s about a size 0 today

NP (and I wear a modern size 2 as well, if that matters to you), but so what? Sizing has changed. If your definition of “vanity sizing” is standard mall sizing since at least 2004, I think there’s a good argument that women’s sizing in the US has just changed. It’s not really vanity sizing anymore, except relative to runway sizing (which is not relevant to the vast majority of the women in this country). You just reached back to the 1960s to find size 8 garments with the same measurements as today’s size 2. That was 60(!) years ago. Things change.

But the correct size for a healthy human body doesn’t change in just 60 years! If you are arguing that “oh, I’m a size 8 so my waist measurement and weight must be heathy” based on some outdated idea that a size 8 is average, then you are misguided. A modern size 8 is worn by overweight women if you are an average height.

What??? At 5’7 and 135 lbs I wear a size 8. Some could weigh less but I don’t think that’s overweight at that height.

And your BMI is 21. So you’re obviously not the body anyone is discussing in this thread.

We are just fatter in the west and accept a higher bar for weight until we consider it fat. In many other countries in the world, 120+ lbs for the standard woman at 5'4" is absolutely overweight.

thanks for pontificating on when your wife is fat. what’s your BMI dude? smh.

20 BMI on the dot. 106/68 BP. 67 LDL. Healthy as a horse due to heavy weight training 5x per week, 5k runs 6 days week, and a very clean diet.

Lol, it's not even me saying my wife fat, she says it out loud all the time she's fat when she's over 110 lbs. She hates the flubbiness in her arms and thighs when she starts to get heavier over 110 lbs.

I’m 5’9’and muscular. I don’t weigh myself anymore because I had bad eating issues and disorders. My lowest was 105 when I was in college and I literally had professors and people pull me aside to ask if I needed help. I’m a size 4-6 in dresses and skirts now and 6-8 in pants. My hips are wider and I’m a pear shape with small A boobs and thin top (small tops usually). I got a reading from a doctor with an overweight BMI card. I was shocked and so was the doctor. I honestly think they out my height in wrong or something. I can chest press 35 lbs each arm and bicep curl 25 so I have muscles and have had them strength training for many years. I didn’t ask what my weight was but my doctor three the little card thing out and was like “wow, in no way are you overweight!”

I agree to some extent - I’m 5’4” and feel very uncomfortable and chubby over 130 lbs, which is generally a mall size 4-6. But female bodies are also more diverse now than they were 60 years ago. Yes, part of that is that more of the population is overweight, but part is just different phenotypes. Some women just have more bulky or muscular builds, fat aside. They just wouldn’t be able to fit into a size 2/4 because of their bone structure. So I don’t think wearing a modern 8 automatically means someone is overweight.

Yes, we should also ignore all other signs of us being fat and unhealthy when we don’t like the results.

The funny part of all this is when you are outside the normal results for BMI being a useful tool, you know it, and shouldn’t be stressed out. Meanwhile people that are not those exceptions are hell bent on finding ways to excuse their poor health. America!

This article was devoid of any sort of scientific insight, but beyond that, it was so poorly written that I felt second-hand embarrassment for the author, Yale, and NYU. It reads like it was written by a high schooler the night before it was due, on a valid topic most likely assigned by the football coach/health teacher.

You’re joking, right? Try a size 8 from a vintage shop and get back to us.
