Amherst and Notre Dame would be two totally different experiences. Amherst probably has a better academic reputation, but personally I think it's dated. Nearly 40 percent of Amherst students are athletes. Make of that what you will but when nearly half of a very small school competes in varsity sports it's going to impact the overall atmosphere of the school.
Notre Dame is bigger and it's a solid school academically. Unless you are totally wedded to the SLAC experience, I would choose that.
Both are better options that Pitt or Emory-Oxford.

Agree easy choice--Not a UVA promoter but UVA easily on this list. Not even worth typing the post.
UVA
UF
Northeastern
Way down the next choice after those three in order.

JMU honors college $32k
U South Carolina. Capstone scholar With merit, $37k
WM waitlist, NOVA this fall/ guaranteed spring admit. $42k
Indiana Kelley direct admit. $57k
Pitt Dietrich direct admit, no merit $55k.
Pitt, get good grades, transfer to UVA or William and Mary.
why would you have him pick almsot the most expensive option? Pick from JMU, USC, Indiana whichever felt best after visiting.
In case he can't transfer and is at Pitt...it is the best of the lot other than William and Mary.
Pitt is better than IU Kelley?
For undergrad, yes. I know a kid from the Gym there now at Pitt doing business. He got money but he turned down Gtown, GW, and W&M for it.

Penn State Smeal. $58K? (no merit)
WM (no direct admit avail). $45K? (we have prepaid plan)
Waiting for UMich, but it's expensive/hard to get in
1. Michigan
2. W&M due to cost
3. Indiana
4. VT due to cost solely as to why over Penn State
5. Penn State.
Assume wants to be in DC area. If NYC, would definitely go all in on trying to get into Michigan. I think cost savings still good for W&M in two if NYC.
Yes, would like to get back to the DC area. Worried about WM's rigor vs. VT (even though both are in state). Wants to have a more relaxed academic environment.
