My husband and I are both feds and make a nice living but live pretty frugally since we have two kids with lots of expenses. Every time we visit our father in law who lives across the country or when he visits here, FIL insists we pay for everything. I find this annoying because FIL is wealthy (my husband has seen his financial records) and he brags about things like never flying economy when he visits Europe (which happens at least once a year).
FIL rarely pays for anything, ever except maybe the occasional fast food lunch where won’t let the kids order happy meals because they’re “too expensive”. I don’t know why this bugs me so much but it does. I have never seen anyone order two entrees at once. Is this normal? No he’s not fat, just chubby.
My BIL would do the same thing if we were footing the bill. One to two appetizers and two entrees of the most expensive things on the menu, then he'd take it to go. It's rude, so either stop paying for him or let it go.

+1, op even mentioned that her FIl has expensive taste in his restaurant preferences so this is easily an extra $100-200 minimum, multiple times per year.
I would love for pp to share the magical sit down restaurant where one can get an appetizer, two entrees, and a dessert for $12-35 inclusive of tax and tip. Sounds like an *unbelieveable* bargain !
The difference is $12-$35 for the 2nd entree. The rest is perfectly normal. You all disgust me
OP can't do basic math. It's not an extra $100-$200. The first entree, app and dessert is the sunk cost it's just the difference of an additional entree. So probably $20-$30. A lot of angst and hand wringing over $20. Maybe try Applebees if things are that tight and OP can't figure out how to split a check.
I’m taking it that OP normally gets just the entree, so second entree + app + dessert + drink could easily be over $100 more than OP wanted to pay.

We always eat family style so it would not bother me. If he actually ate all of it, it would also not bother me.
I often am in the mood for more than one entree. Whether it is with my friends or family, we share. Only with not so good friends do we not share.
No, I would not be upset at FIL for ordering two entrees. I have the opposite problem. My mom hates leftovers and often tries not to order an entree. She knows the rest of us will order too much and there will be leftovers.

My IL’s fall into a similar category, they never offer to pay. Ever. We will pay for everyone’s dinner and walk over to the ice cream stand and they won’t even pretend to reach for their wallet. The only solution was to simply stop going out to dinner with them.

1. He shouldn't be eating that much, honestly. Restaurant dishes are usually higher in calories than their home-made counterparts.
2. Try something radical. When he visits, don't go out to eat. Cook at home, or order less-expensive take-out. Tell him you're on a budget, even if it's not true. Watch him struggle with that, then when he's not around, splurge!

If this is his worst quirk, I would just pay for the second entree and roll your eyes on the inside. It's def super annoying but not worth rocking the boat over if it's infrequent. However if he says it's for the table, and you're feeling extra spicy, I might interject with an "Great idea!" and ask the waiter to bring some extra plates to split it.

Op here! Yes servers comment on it all the time. “Um… two entrees for one person? Like plates side by side or first one plate a d then the other?”
FIL will tell the waiter “oh one is for the table” which makes no sense, especially since he puts it in front of his plate and doesn’t offer to share. Sometimes he will order a second round when the waiter comes to check on the table. This is super annoying because it adds an extra half hour to the meal while we are just sitting there not eating.
Its super super weird and uncomfortable.
