Subject: Does anyone else hate Bethesda?
Grew up in Bethesda. Left town / had a family and came back looking to buy in the same cluster I grew up in.
But I needed 5BDRs. And a garage. And a yard. And realized none of this existed without a $3.X - so we slid the map further west. Found a plenty big house in Potomac. So far into the woods I can barely see the neighbors. Most of my trips are to the Village or Cabin John and occasionally Montgomery Mall or Rockville. I do not miss Bethesda retail. I do not miss the proximity between homes. And I would rather be amongst the conservation trees and the conservative views than jammed in with the yard signs and the virtuous.

I really don’t think you understand how to use Zillow. I found at least 9 houses for sale that are not new construction or condos - I stopped after page 1. I didn’t include the house for sale at 24 million

Many of these are in the part of 20817 near 270 and 495 which will always be less desirable. Others are over $2.5 million (one is over $7 million). If you don't want to live near highways, and don't have a budget over $2.5 million, there are two options on your list. Those two have been on the market for under a week.
So first you say there are no houses, now it’s they aren’t in the right area or are too expensive. Bethesda is a desirable area so perfection may not be available.
I said “almost zero” which is correct.

Lived in Bethesda for 10 years. Hated it - fat-lipped women with scowls, pretentious, insecure men, rude, self-centered residents, boring stores, lackluster restaurants, ugly buildings, congested, honestly the only thing good was it is close to beltway and DC. The schools were ok, very crowded, plenty of douchebag kids. My kids graduated and we left and couldn't be happier.
Drove through to check it out since we were in the area and saw it has gotten worse...will the construction EVER end? No character.

Like I said, they have a good bagel shop - it’s the only draw. But, almost without fail, every trip provides a reminder of the terrible nature of those who live there. If there were farms, ball fields and country clubs north and west of DC, I would be much happier.

I don’t understand the antagonism. It’s a suburb, the homes are fairly nice, it’s close to DC, and the schools are good. Is there some sort of reverse psychology going on where others in MoCo and Maryland resent the fact that Bethesda and a few other suburbs prop everyone else up? I don’t go there often enough to assess whether there’s something uniquely awful about the residents, but it’s hard to imagine that’s the case. Do you go after people living in AU Park or Chevy Chase this hard, too?
I go after AU Parkers and Bethesda’s residents with the same vigor. Both are filled with the same type of jerks, no-it-alls and self important types (with minimal to no basis for their attitudes). I would rather golf courses and parks in both locations. [/quo

I live in Bethesda in 20816, and I like it. The main advantage is the people/neighbors -- they are quiet, pleasant, and take good care of their house/yard. I have also observed that it tends to be a well-educated group of people with interesting careers.

You don’t know if it’s really worth that unless you sell it. Doubt there’s been that much appreciation in four years, assuming you paid a fair price in 2020.
I do based on comps. A great deal price in 2020 for a very large home on a very large lot in 20817 is now $3 million.
