We’re still waiting for NWSL to acknowledge this partnership with GA and the coming league academies they must be in development forming by now.

But US Soccer did give GA full membership. That’s a fact. And it’s a start.

US Club soccer, the governing body of ECNL, already has the same membership.

The same membership that the Special Olympics also has also received.

This is not a partnership as much as it is a certificate of achievement.

US Soccer + GA means GA can register players themself they no longer need to go through USSSA. It also means that GA can register players for other groups. (Like DPL or whoever)

ECNL has to go through US Club Soccer to register players.

What this means is that MLS NWSL USMNT USWNT USL and now GA are all on the same level. ECNL is 1 tier lower.

Does this mean anything? Not specifically because in the end both GA and ECNL can register players. However if you look at more deeply that seaseme Street song comes to mind... "one of these kids is doing their own thing. One of these kids is not like the other". Also if NWSL was to partner with a girls league GA completely controls their future. If NWSL was to partner with ECNL US Club Soccer could hold ECNL hostage or force ECNL to pay huge fees to register players.

Can you name even one practical effect of this?

Umm… that if nwsl or usl decide they want to lock down talent, they are forced to link with GA versus ECNL.

Lock down talent? Can you explain what that means? The league minimum salary in the NWSL is 36k a year. They can not afford to subsidize youth soccer the way as MLS. Even if they could, most girls are aiming for college not NWSL or the YNT

It means exactly what they said.

In MLS Next players fall into a predefined pathway that ends at MLS or College. What this means is that most talent in America will end up playing in MLS.

NWSL needs to set up something similar to make sure talent funnels to them. (Not USL or whatever else)

with what money? The academies that give MLS Next legitimacy cost the host clubs money. NWSL is barley solvent. I'm guessing the NWSL is perfectly fine with the cost of player development being subsidized by youth clubs and colleges.

OMG. Both GA and ECNL are great.

And if your DD plays in these leagues, congratulations! Your respective DD is a great athlete and talented player. They will play for D1 and have the potential to play for NWSL if they want to.

Now, just be happy that you all raised great daughters!

Even then, it's a recognition of the work put in by GA leadership over the past 4 years.

Even if it's only to benefit by being able to self govern/self sanction, people have to realize that from the second the DA was abandoned by the USSF at a really tough time, a lot of these clubs and people in leadership positions spent countless hours working together to ensure that these kids would have a league to play in. I would assume that this is a group that cares about continuing something that they saw benefit in with the DA and they will continue to position themselves to grow the game for the girls side for the better.

Also remember this is the same group that created MLS Next for boys when GA blew up. I'd say they're fairly committed to the Academy model or as with MLS Next a mix of Academy and Pay to Play.

Most girls parents don't understand how MLSN works. Here's a quick high level. MLS clubs run free acadamies and they play against local pay to play club teams in a league. All players are considered amateur so when they get close to graduating high school they can make a choice between playing in college or professionally assuming they're good enough. There's a lot more but above is the most important.

From a college recruiting perspective MLSN players are considered more desirable than ECNL or other leagues. This is why all the boys clubs want to play in MLSN.

Yes, then why is it that US soccer hasn’t worked with ECNL to create league that helps players in college AND work their way to the pros like MLS did with MLS NEXT?

Because mls owns mls next and US soccer doesn't have another professional league to offer up

First, GA posted this news on IG and it has over 5000 likes. Which means the news is more than what meets the eye.

GA as it is, is not better overall than ECNL.
But if it plays out like MLS Next did, then ECNL girls are in trouble.

Boys ECNL teams are looking to move to MLS Next in Masse.

What that means for the GAL.

USL was also just sanctioned by US Soccer. It is now a competitor to NWSL. USL has no salary cap.

NWSLs next move is to lock down talent. I don’t necessarily think academies will be formed, but they will use GA teams as resources.

If it plays out similar to how MLS Next did, then ECNL clubs will be hard pressed to convert their teams mls next and GA.

A start to what? Players enter NWSL through a draft. All but a handful go to college prior to being drafted. Are you saying that GA will offer a direct path to the NWSL and that the league will pass up more talented players in order to take GA players? No one has actually explained what they think this new link between GA and NWSL with actually look like in practice. What we do know is that NWSL cannot afford anything approaching an academy structure, so anything branded as an academy will be pay to play. We know that the vast majority of top girls players go to college not the pros. So what does this start mean?
