No

No. Many, many kids at W schools want to go to UMD. Great school and about 20% the price of a lot of privates. UMD rejects tons out of W schools because they want to make sure they are servicing all parts of the state. Like every university, kids are competing with other kids in the same school. At W schools in MOCO, a huge percentage of the class has 4.0 or close to 4.0 and like 12 APs.

Don't students from those high schools/magnet want to go elsewhere tho?

Maybe no if they were trying for CS which has one of the best programs on the east coast (after MIT). Another limited enrollment program is business.

4.65 WGPA with 13 APs rejeted not even wait list out of Churchill last year. Some 4.7 to 4.73 rejected.

I think 4.75 WGPA and up is minimun unless a hook

It depends on the hs. Too many kids from Churchill have the same gpa and similar activities and hooks.

What hooks specifically?

Money, pay to play programs, same activities - sports, theater, music, forming non-profits, internships or jobs their parents got.

Agreed. I have a kid at a slightly less competitive MCPS school with a higher GPA and similar AP number and I doubt he is top 10% of the class. He might be in the top 20%.

Just lots of smart kids at the top end.

While there are definitely other good public colleges in Maryland, they are markedly lower caliber. UMBC, St. Mary's, and Towson are decent options.

UMCP programs with competitive admissions generally require that you start them as a freshman, which means you cannot transfer in after attending MC. However, there are plenty of other top programs at UMCP that are not competitive or take transfer students. That can be an excellent route to save money, too.

Not true - I know students who have transferred into business and engineering in the past couple of years after a year of community college.

Did you read that some programs are limiting to 100 transfers? Information about colleges can get stale.

This may be true about CS but it definitely is not true across the board. If you have a cumulative 3.6 in all your college work it is an auto admit to the business school. 3-3.6 students are eligible for holistic review for admission to the business school.

Note this must be the GPA for college classes, not HS or AP classes. Heard this directly from business school admissions less than three months ago.

So in the end, those kids who didn't get in to UMD and went to MC for one or two years still won't get in to UMD?

They can get into UMD, but maybe not there chosen major. CS is an example of that.

Prior years, it was easy to transfer into UMD for CS. You just needed the requisite courses and a minimum GPA. Not anymore. There are now only 100 transfer spots open for CS -- both internal in UMD and external like CC. That makes it highly unlikely that a transfer student gets into the CS program at UMD.

Where do MC CS students end up attending if UMD is nearly impossible for CS?

UMBC
