I was thinking same and just went to look at boundary map. It's easy to visualize how some Nottingham kids could end up at Jamestown.

More likely a bunch of Discovery kids end up at Jamestown and Taylor. I think Tuckahoe is left pretty intact (probably picks up the 2 straggling PUs currently bused to Nottingham) and Discovery picks up most of the Notties. They'll be reunited with the former Notties.

Well, since Jamestown seems to be consistently under-enrolled, maybe it would make more sense to just send as many NES as possible directly there and minimize future ripple effects having to redraw all the boundaries every time Jamestown's under-capacity and Tuckahoe is overcrowded.

Are you a Discovery family? You want Nottingham kids to ride a bus that literally passes by Discovery to get to the further school - Jamestown - just so your kids don't have to move too? Sorry, that's not how this works.

APS says in pre-CIP that Nottingham will go to Tuckahoe and Discovery, except for pre-K which ends up at Taylor. More than just 2 planning units end up at Tuckahoe based on the numbers they state, and then to prevent that school from being even more overcrowded, existing Tuckahoe kids end up elsewhere. And when Nottingham kids end up at Discovery, Discovery end up at Jamestown and Taylor. The whole point is everyone gets scrambled when Nottingham closes.

Cardinal can’t take any more kids. Tuckahoe kids are not going there. They’re not going to mess with cardinal which would have massive ripple effects as all the schools in the middle of the county where they would then send Cardinal kids (Ashlawn/Glebe) are beyond full.

I think most of Nottingham goes to Discovery and a good chunk of Discovery goes to Taylor or Jamestown.

All the boundaries in NA will be redrawn in 2026. It doesn’t matter that you think they won’t mess with your school: they will.

Dumb

Yep. Closing a school has consequences beyond just that school.

Yes they will start messing with fully enrolled schools when there are plenty of under enrolled ones to choose from just because. That’s what will happen.

Yes they will. Because the under enrolled schools aren't all conveniently next to each other.

What are you talking about. They are. Its easy to shift Discovery kids to Jamestown and Taylor to make room for Nottingham kids.

You might want to look at the Tuckahoe walkzone - Plenty of Nottingham students are going to Tuckahoe which can't take anymore trailers.

You people are so new here.

The walk zones don’t matter.

What does matter are the students that don't want to leave Discovery and Tuckahoe has limited capacity. That will force students into Cardinal (who should go there below Langston). This will create a domino effect pushing students out of Cardinal to Ashlawn.

So your argument is that instead of pissing off Discovery they will piss off Cardinal. So they will move no one from Discovery, leave Jamestown and Taylor significantly under enrolled and instead shuffle kids from Cardinal to Ashlawn who were very impacted in the last boundary adjustment.

Don’t see it. But at least I understand what you’re saying.

Actually it is APS saying have you read it? Here are the bullet points. Nothing about Jamestown...and how many Discovery planning units will want to go to Taylor?

Discovery receives approximately 241 Nottingham students.
• Tuckahoe receives approximately 150 Nottingham student.
• Taylor could receive approximately 90 students from Discovery to balance enrollment.
• Nottingham PreK/SPED classes could move to Jamestown or Cardinal which does not host a PreK
in 2022-23.
• APS would evaluate whether some Discovery planning units are in the walk zone to Taylor.
• Based on the 2018 study of walk zones, 140 Nottingham K-5 students reside in planning units
that are within the walk zones for Discovery (13) and Tuckahoe (127), their newly assigned
schools.

NP. I have to say that I do find this a bit screwy. It's like they're intentionally leaving Jamestown underenrolled so they have a place to stash all the prek and SPED classes they don't have/want to make room for at other schools. Just balance enrollment across them all and stop using prek and SPED as pawns in the chess game!

Jamestown is in such a weird place geographically and has the highest percentage of private, it's always been hard to fill. Query why they aren't closing Jamestown?

I think the boundaries would be too weird if you only go in that direction, even if there's enough capacity in that direction. I don't see this happening without shifting Notties to Tuckahoe, and then Tuckahoe kids somewhere, presumably Cardinal. I have no idea where Cardinal sends its overflow.

As does leaving multiple under-enrolled schools open with enough seats for an entire school.

Tuckahoe is joe overcrowded currently. It’s not as empty as some of these other schools.
