I completely agree with you. Anybody saying admissions is "grim" at this point is probably a troll.
If you're a parent, it's grim right up until your kid gets in somewhere they're happy about and then it's great. These threads pop up every year

My B+ from one of the so-called "Big 3" was also waitlisted last night. I am somewhat relieved. Already accepted into two schools that to me are better choices, but Tennessee was their first choice. Taking it surprisingly well. It's all very confusing.
It really isn't that confusing. Big state schools are using algorithms to admit students. How many Big 3 kids actually attend a school like University of Tennessee if they get in. Not many. The algorithm determined that your kid was not likely to accept. If a big State U is your kid's dream, you are better off at a public school OR a more academically comprehensive private (not an elite prep school).

This is the answer. Look at the college matriculation lists for the last 4-5 years from the Big 3 schools. NOT ONE KID matriculated at Tennessee in that time. They believe your DC is using it as a safety school and they're not playing that game anymore.

Some of this is old. 2016- 2019 was a different world.
That's only NCS's list - the other 3 are through 2022. Are there NCS grads at Tennessee?
The point is, when the college has had a record number of applications for a fewer number of acceptances this year, they don't have the inclination to admit a kid from a school which has never sent a kid to the college.
UT received 44,300 first-year applications as of Dec. 12, a 43% increase overall compared to the same time last year.
The office also announced that next fall’s first-year class would be smaller than this year’s record freshman class of 6,846 students. Though the acceptance rate in 2022 was already seven percentage points lower than in 2021, it is expected to drop again for the most competitive year of applications in the university’s history.

LOL - I'm PP you agreed with. I wouldn't actually call those people trolls because it really does feel quite icky right now. I am trying to keep my own positive narrative of patience and hope (and sharing it in my post above) - but I fully recognize that many families currently feel grim (the same is true for DMV public and frankly, families we know all over the country!).
I think everyone needs to take a breath. My daughter at NCS and her friends have all been accepted to multiple places. They may not be their first choice and that will be revealed in the spring, but everyone needs to breathe until March.
Perhaps it depends on how high the students were reaching. My daughter is not the top of the class but has had zero rejections so far and she is not alone.
It’s a reminder to parents to help their child find true likely schools so no one is panicking after the ED/EA rounds.
Exactly. We don't even use the term "safety". Your kid needs to be excited about all the schools they applied to and that attitude starts at home with the parents. Every school has its positives, focus on that when discussing options.

GDS sends a lot of kids to Wisconsin. Not sure you can generalize like this.
According to Wisconsin's own data 10 GDS students have enrolled at Wisconsin since 2020. I would not call that a lot, but, it is a lot in comparison to University of Tennessee which is a big fat 0. Wisconsin is much higher ranked than Tennessee (I don't think Tennessee is in the top 100). The parent who said their kid did not get into Tennessee said their kid had already received 2 other acceptances. My guess is those were solid T100 (or better) privates.

NP. I swear there was a thread a few months ago BOASTING about all the wonderful acceptances for the Big 3??
