Oh, wow! What do you find creepy about Mendocino and Humboldt? I wanted to go to school at Humboldt State, but I was afraid that I'd flunk out because I would always be hiking and kayaking. It's just gorgeous there, to me.

I think the town is run-down and depressed looking and feels slightly dangerous. The Victorian houses and gray skies are an eerie combination. The woods up in that area are so thick and old and like you could just disappear and never be found. People who live in isolation on side roads. The college is in Arcata and maybe has a different vibe. I find the whole area beautiful but eerie at the same time like you have to respect nature's power and remember you're small and insignificant.

I don’t even remember the motel name. It’s not the kind of place I’ve ever stayed at before or since, but somehow it seemed like a good idea at the time. Hopefully I didn’t stay at some sort of notorious murder motel?!

I remember feeling deeply freaked out in Cooperstown NY. I cannot explain it. It just felt lonesome.

Any commercial neighborhood built up mainly from 1925 through about 1955. Those buildings can be beautiful and interesting, but they’re usually creepy.

Old Town Alexandria. I very seldom spend time in Virginia. Several years ago. A friend who knows that I like history and architecture, and old waterfront towns, made plans for the two of us to have dinner in Old Town. We were walking around and chatting, and generally having a good time. Then something made me stop in my tracks. I felt odd — and don’t have a better way to describe it. I looked up from where I was standing and saw a plaque on the wall of a nearby building saying that the building had been a holding area for enslaved people who were going to be sold. I think I somehow picked up on the horrors of the place.
