Not really. Students largely go south for college, unless attending a really prestigious school. Really very few out of staters go to the northern public universities.

This isn't fair at all. I grew up in NYS and I didn't go to a SUNY. I went to an Ivy out of state. I went to the Ivy for the education not the social validation. The SUNY system is very solid and well serves many, many NY residents. I had relatives and many HS classmates who went to SUNY schools. But SUNY is not for everyone and that's perfectly ok, no need to denigrate those who choose to go elsewhere. It just isn't going to compete with the tip top national universities or SLACs, which is, again, perfectly fine.

FWIW, I have a very good idea of the type of education the SUNY schools provide vs my education. I'm confident I made the right choice for me.

The SUNY campuses are not attractive, they are in run down towns and in the middle of nowhere (many) and the weather is grey and dreary and cold. They are great schools, but not at the level of a UVA/UMich/UWisc/GATech/Purdue/etc that attracts tons of OOS students. They are just a level below. They also do not have the SPorts/rah, rah attraction that most of the popular OOS state flagships have. And the price is similar---who is paying OOS of $50K+ for that? They are not. They will go to any of those other popular OOS schools that are better overall and academically

SUNY New Paltz is in a cute town with gorgeous nature nearby, an easy trip to NYC and costs $33K out of state.

New Paltz now has a university, no longer college, designation. We toured and it's pretty nice. Creative and academic areas of concentration. Cute town, beautiful environment.

FIT, Hunter, Queens College and Baruch are great CUNY schools - city university of NY system

We like to stay at Mohonk Mountain House, a resort nearby, and have passed through New Paltz many times. It looks so cute! I always see a ton of young people walking around at night.

And rocking horse ranch!!! New Paltz town is amazing like Gilmore Girls in real life.

Plus an Amtrak stop near school and not a bad drive DC
