No it does not seem high at all. The average cost is about $10k. You clearly have not needed to bury anyone.
And I am sure there are medical bills as well, and yes if this can cover those, or some time off for his family to grieve, even better.

Yes to all of this and I see the goal has been exceeded. I hope the family can use some to take time off and not worry about bills. Remember not all families are in positions with salary/paid family leave. This is their child who just passed. The loss and pain are unimaginable.

The written APE statement is far from controversial. I'm not sure why you have your panties in such a bunch.
