I keep protein bars and nut mixes in my car, along with water and a blanket. Plus emergency car items. Guess because I grew up lower middle class and in the country. You never know when your car might break down and have to wait for services.

After being stuck with two young kids during the 2011 storm, I always have food and water in my car. I wasn't on 66, just regular roads like 50, but it still took me 1.5 hours to go a few miles.

That WaPo oped was just stupid but par for the course for Charles Lane.

He was just writing off the top of his head on a subject he knows nothing about. An EV is no worse off than a gas vehicle in these circumstances, and maybe better off. People seem to just assume that because ICE lose range while idling that EVs must too. Meanwhile an EV could last 3-4 days keeping the cabin a comfortable temp if needed. I guess it’s true that if the EV runs out of charge entirely it’s a little more complicated, at least today, to give it 50 miles of charge than to pour 2 gallons of gas into a car but AAA already has mobile level 2 chargers they can send out, so that’s hardly an earthshattering observation.

All the weather advisories were telling people who must go out in the snow storm to pack extra water, food, and blanket. He's from snowy climate, I really thought he'd be better prepared.

Minimal power drain if the car is off. But if that's the case, and they don't need heat or A/C, neither does the gas car. It can just turn off also.

Couldn’t the armed forces nearby provide heavy vehicles that could get out onto the terrain and help get food and salt onto the ground between vehicles. Quantico maybe was closest?
