He doesn’t. He’s been wrong on so many prior statements.
Omicron didn’t actually originate in South Africa, it was just identified there as a new variant on November 11. Long covid can take less than a month to develop, with symptoms showing between 5 to 15 days after one develops covid.
It's still not even agreed upon in the medical community that "long Covid" exists. It's a good fallback argument for lockdown forever folks, but it's much more likely that "long Covid" is the result of being shut in for two years eating like garbage and feeling sorry for yourself. "Long Covid" is the new "Chronic Fatigue Syndrome". It's called depression. Get outside and go for a walk in the sun.
This is quite literally not what long haul COVID is. I have a kid who was playing 2 travel sports who is now (maybe permanently) sidelined. Instead of going to practices and games, he gets to see multiple specialists at Children’s.
My healthy, fit, active college friend has long-haul COVID. She now suffers from long-term heart, lung, and neurological issues. Walking in the sun will not cure her, unfortunately. Really wish people would stop with the misinformation and trivializing of this diagnosis. It is very real and will have life-altering consequences for a segment of the population.

Return to in-person will be on Monday 1/10. There will be another whole school testing day on Thursday (1/5) to isolate any positive cases not caught by the 1/2 testing. Apparently, of the 1,214 people (students and staff) tested on 1/2, there were 135 positive results.
Sorry, that's SSSAS.
With an 11% positivity rate that seems like a reasonable approach, because this is measuring the entire school population, not a sample. The 20%+ numbers reported by state or local governments are based on a self-selected sample so they can't be directly compared to a measure of the entire population (the results reported by states are people who sought a test because they felt sick or were traveling and so can be expected to be higher in general). A second test on Thursday will help establish how much ongoing community spread there is.
I heard that over 100 students didn’t test. At least the test later in the week should catch cases from New Years celebrations
Over 100 kids missing the test is concerning. It might mean families are extending their vacations which could mess up the schools’s plan to get everyone back and tested. Hope these families have the decency to at least be back for the next round of testing since the school is doing everything they can.

I have friends with long COVID over 1 year. My neighbor, a pulmonary specialist, said one quarter of his COVID patients have long haul COVID.
I am not aware of any controversy over whether it exists but more around how long it will last. Research links the mechanics of it as being similar to chronic fatigue syndrome that is triggered by a virus and send immune system into a self destruct mode for many years. Hopefully, Long haul COVID will Not last as long as CFS. But we don’t know yet because not enough time has passed.
Please see the award winning documentary Unrest if you care to educate yourself better about chronic fatigue syndrome. It is far from a psycho somatic mental illness. It is real and debilitates many millions around the world.
It is triggered by a virus, usually Epstein Barr virus, than creates havoc in the auto immune system of people with CFS. Many previously healthy active and happy people become shadows of their former selves after getting viral I’ll eases that result in CFS.
COVID researches are currently exploring similarities with long haul COVID, which is also triggered by a virus.
I have family and friends struggling with CFS. It is not a mental illness but very much rooted in biology. There is complex interplay between a virus, auto immune system and stress. Stigma does not help but education, research, moral support and major lifestyle modifications help.
