Nope, I am a parent of 3 FCPS students who has paid close attention to the issues. I disagree with some actions (tj admissions,calendar) and will vote differently in 2023 but I do not agree with the book banning, anti crt bs, loss of civility, or voting for Governor based on my experience with a school board during a pandemic. It’s highly disturbing that you folks are so radicalized that you cannot understand that opinions differ among FCPS parents.

Try to watch the public comment section of the last school board meeting to see parents who support the school board and try to get out of your openfcps bubble.

It's hard because social justice issues are important to me, I want our transgender students supported, I do not believe in banning books from school libraries, BUT I also have high standards for my children's education. I wish liberals could manage both at the same time. I don't understand why they've become exclusive of each other. Liberals are going to lose all the diverse supporters they have if they don't keep academic standards high. I don't know why they think non-white parents want a focus on emotional health over learning. I think that's a white construct, and honestly, rather demeaning. We go to a elementary with a high population of first and second generation immigrants, a very diverse group, and what I've seen from the parents I've gotten to know is that they want a strong academic education. Many already have strong multi-generation families - what they really need is a fantastic education for their youngest generation.

No, the leadership at the VDOE will change. Or, it will as long as he keeps his promises. And that will have a ripple effect on the standards our county public schools systems use. Will the new Secretary of Education green light standards that remove pre-Algebra through Algebra II, making it nearly impossible for military families to transition in and out of Virginia with kids in 8th-10th grade? Will the social studies changes to the SOL stay as they are (I'm loosely opposed to at least some of the CRT-lite-in-the-classroom horror stories out there, but I like the new SOL standards that round out our history lessons)? What will happen with the existing, optional-to-implement SEL standards? All this comes from VDOE. Also from VDOE - dealing with complaints about violations of SPED laws, something VDOE has done poorly with in the past few years. Youngkin promised gatherings of SPED parents he would change that; will he keep that promise?

Another thing that will change is the House of Delegates. Some of what VDOE does is implement the practical side of laws passed by the General Assembly and pass them down. With a split general assembly, we might see different laws passed related to education than we would have otherwise.

If Youngkin plays it smart, he'll double down on education and really get involved with it. Given Democrats ceded the high ground on this issue over the past several years (and certainly the past year) with their increasingly poor judgment, it's a great opportunity for him.

Sears served on the state board of ed and has a very pro education as a means to raise your opportunities type philosophy. I suspect she will have a big role in leading education reforms.

Thanksgiving is not a religious holiday.

Christmas is a federal holiday because so many people take it off. I actually would be fine with the winter break being moved to the end of the second quarter but that will lead to a lot of absences since so many people travel for Christmas. That week between Christmas an New Years would be lost due to Teachers requesting vacation time and kids not attending because families travel.

I am thrilled that Spring Break is not tied to Easter this year and would be happy if they set a specific week for Spring Break and keep it there.

No one has an issue with O Days if it was only no testing and no long term products due but Teachers have been told, and many Teachers are following, that they cannot teach new material, review for exams, or other similar activities. That is the objection. The fact that AP exams have been shifted and learning is impacted is problematic.

Your comment about your kids being in school only points to the reality that most kids are attending school on O days. I am Catholic and never missed school because of Good Friday. I can't think of anyone who didn't go to school on Good Friday. I doubt that a large number of Hispanic kids missed school to celebrate the Day of the Dead. It is good to have a policy in place to allow people to take those days but the current policy needs to be adjusted so that it has less of a direct impact on everyone.

Virginia Department of Ed will change almost immediately after his inauguration.

He is going to be firing the current appointees and replacing them with professionals who value education, rigor and excellence over indoctrination, low standards and racism.

Just think, once Youngkin gets his policies in place, our teachers can return to using their planning days on things like literacy and math skills, instead of spending all their training hours on Ibrahim X and white privilege.

Sorry, but if you're still suggesting that the opposition to current education trends is primarily due to "astroturfing," or that "CRT is not a thing," you either haven't been paying attention or are simply looking for a way to avoid reality.

The Democrats created conditions locally where the response to Covid, like the response to every other major challenge FCPS has been facing, has been woefully inadequate, because the schools are run and overseen by second-rate bureaucrats and low-quality School Board members who spend 75% of their time saying what they think is politically correct, 20% of their time on Twitter endorsing political candidates, and 5% of their time on solutions.
