I just think he is insecure. He wants to play the genteel Southern gentleman and emulate his golf/work buddies who have family wealth. He thinks if his daughters responds with “yes, ma’am and yes, sir,” go to church and cotillion and conduct themselves as little ladies, he will feel at ease in his world. It isn’t all that different from the endless preppy and Wasp threads.

Born and raised in the DC area and nobody I know says BBQ, we all say cookout. However, it's weird af that he corrects you. What has motivated him to be this way? Does he have a fascination with movies based in the south or something? So odd.

Next time he does that, let everyone present know you are his sister.. Refer to his "momma" as "our momma", etc. That should shut him up pretty fast.

Some people tend to adopt the accent of where they live more than others. I met a woman from Pennsylvania living in Richmond, VA, and she had an "Old Richmond" accent even though we didn't hang out with old wealthy types. Then she moved to England and came back with an English accent.

I just don't think my tongue takes on new accents very easily. I can't even do a good approximation of the NJ accent I grew up with now that it's melded into some nondescript newscaster accent. I think people who are good at learning new languages and/or are musical are generally better at accents. And it may not be a conscious choice but a very subconscious choice to assimilate.

Look up Eric Singer accents/dialects on YouTube for some interesting lessons on dialects.

I think a lot of PPs are missing the point. The issue here is trying to control the kids and make them speak or act a certain way. Isn’t life hard enough these days. Let the kids develop their speech and dialect naturally. If your DH wants to speak this way I would just humor him, but I wouldn’t allow him to “correct” you or the kids.
