It is a real one. I know people who have gotten off it. I know others in the same year who got rejected.

We are on the wait list. Is it a "real" wait list, or just meant as a way for letting our DS down lightly?

I heard soem that are accepted have received informal hint if they call the admission office. But they are not supposed to tell. So you won't get anything from this board.

No, having just done this a few years ago for Pre-K , I can tell you: the letters will come on Saturday.

I agree letters will be put in the mailbox on Friday. The school doesn't want to deal with angry parents, give them a day or two to cool off.

Someone told me that STA doesn't make many concessions for athletes, legacies, etc. Anyone know if this is true?

I heard the same sentiment from the bogeyman.

My impression -- and it is just that after seeing things for a few years -- is that it is mostly new "unhooked" applicants. I think you are right that most alumni kids/siblings are already there by ninth grade. It doesn't mean there are never siblings or alumni kids coming it, but it feels like most of the kids are from the general pool. If your child is in that latter category and applying for admission this year, good luck to you! I believe I've read on their website that their "yield" for upper school admits is 50% or so (it's a lot higher for earlier entries, for example the Beauvoir admits) so that really they may be admitting 40+ to fill 20 spots. (Makes the odds a little better.) From what I've been told/seen, by 9th grade a lot of parents rely on their child to make the school choice and not every boy wants an all-boys school.

In retrospect, getting into STA was much harder (and complicated) than getting into a top 10 college for both of my sons.
