The OD contacts the majority with a noncommittal, "it looks good," "they really like him," "he did really well on the verbal portion of his exam."
As far as I know, the OD contacts all families. Having been privy to several STA application experiences now, it seems to me that poor performance with in-house STA testing coupled with poor behavior in the Beauvoir years (those SECOND grade teachers recommendations count for more than you might think) will spell almost certain doom for an applicant.
Not that this matters now, but should anyone dredge this post up nest year in late November/ early Dec when parents of DC's applying to STA/NCS start to wait for that call: THERE IS NO ORDER TO THE CALLS. In this town, if there were a pattern, people would be getting all upset if they were not called on first day and start worrying about what that meant for their DC. I know a few applicants over the years who were told quite assuredly yes and they were called on last day. Others told quite assuredly yes and called on first day. Repeat : there is no pattern not even alphabetical by first name, by last name, by birthday, no pattern. What there is a professional who does his very best, imho, to give considerable time and thought to each call. That you can count on. Best of luck. Am sure your DC is a wonderful child in many many ways.
