It was literally a question about the usage needs of Hardy and what would be best for them. As I said, when I was in public school PE we did go outside and learn a lot of sports. What else might be useful and helpful for Hardy students, and have they requested and also been denied permits for usable spaces. Yeesh.

Is that a joke? Yes, ellington needs to be redone but that shouldn't be a subsitute. It will take lots of money and several years before that field is ready to use. And lots of other DCPS schools, such as School without walls, will need to use it. Can't believe Maret decided to post the update on the website and can't believe they seem so committed to their own crazy version of the truth.
Even Elissa Silverman talked about bringing Ellington online for more school children to use. But precious neighbors want to keep it for their giant dog park instead of having it as a usable safe place for children. As a matter of fact, the Hardy PTO reps there also agreed that Ellington would be a great place for Hardy.
The Hardy reps said it would be useful, not “great.” But it was noted that it still has deficiencies— no parking, no locker rooms, (no bathrooms?), not regulation size currently. Ellington Field is needed, but that doesn’t change the fact that DPR had no business renewing the Maret deal for Jelleff.
There’s plenty of space to make that field regulation size, with parking, and probably a little dog park as well. It’s a large plot of land that was designed for athletic use for children, as noted by many during the round table. The infrastructure is already there, it could probably be online by the Spring of 2021 at the latest. Council member Silverman asked DPR about getting money in the budget for that.
What is the solution for the 100 kids in Jellef after school that have no access to the field that is literally steps away?
Well it’s certainly not going to be giving the field to Hardy, Walls, Burke and Field and every other school that wants to use it. Do you propose exclusive use from 3-8 pm every day for Boys and Girls Club? Have the BGC ever even tried to submit permitting for the space?
The after-school program at Jelleff is a DPR program. According to the DPR permitting priority, they should be #1 on the priority list.
And I’ll ask again-has BGC ever even asked or tried for permitting? How about Hardy? Do they need Jelleff during the school day for PE? Why does British school have it every day from 8-3. Does that take away from Hardy programming?
Since you are digging in hard and fast, DPR runs the after school program at Jellef - why should they ask for permission from themselves?
Just asking questions. Does Hardy have PE needs during the day? Have they asked for permitting? Is there a proposal from the BGC for how/when they’d need to utilize the field space? It doesn’t matter if it’s Maret or Walls, if the BGC kids are on the field when varsity sports are practicing and playing, any injury would be a lawsuit waiting to happen. There should be dedicated outdoor space for BGC. Perhaps when arlington is brought to playing standards, the field space at Hardy could be used for BGC.
Since you are not familiar with how public schools operate, PE is traditionally held in the gym. And we agree, there shold dedicated space for BGC, in fact, there is a huge fenced in area right outside the recreation center that would be perfect. BTW the field space at Hardy doesn't resolve the issue that after care kids need to be onsite for pickup or the greater risk of having elementary school kids crossing Wisconsin avenue for outdoor recreation.
Shame on you.

Well since they currently have zero access to outdoor space on the field, a 50' X 50' cut of the farthest reach of the field would be an improvement over nothing.
Until a baseball flies to them and hurts someone. You really think that’s a viable option? It’s a lawsuit waiting to happen.
You really don’t get it. Public schools sub-divide fields for practice all the time.

Which means Ellington should be brought up to usable shape ASAP.
So let's get this straight, kids, as young as 6 should be expected to walk across Wisconsin Ave to have access to outdoor space? I guess .3 miles isn't that far but how does one even believe this is a reasonable option?
