And lots of other DCPS schools, such as School without walls, will need to use it. Can't believe Maret decided to post the update on the website and can't believe they seem so committed to their own crazy version of the truth.
Even Elissa Silverman talked about bringing Ellington online for more school children to use. But precious neighbors want to keep it for their giant dog park instead of having it as a usable safe place for children. As a matter of fact, the Hardy PTO reps there also agreed that Ellington would be a great place for Hardy.
The Hardy reps said it would be useful, not “great.” But it was noted that it still has deficiencies— no parking, no locker rooms, (no bathrooms?), not regulation size currently. Ellington Field is needed, but that doesn’t change the fact that DPR had no business renewing the Maret deal for Jelleff.
There’s plenty of space to make that field regulation size, with parking, and probably a little dog park as well. It’s a large plot of land that was designed for athletic use for children, as noted by many during the round table. The infrastructure is already there, it could probably be online by the Spring of 2021 at the latest. Council member Silverman asked DPR about getting money in the budget for that.
What is the solution for the 100 kids in Jellef after school that have no access to the field that is literally steps away?
Well it’s certainly not going to be giving the field to Hardy, Walls, Burke and Field and every other school that wants to use it. Do you propose exclusive use from 3-8 pm every day for Boys and Girls Club? Have the BGC ever even tried to submit permitting for the space?
Well since they currently have zero access to outdoor space on the field, a 50' X 50' cut of the farthest reach of the field would be an improvement over nothing.

The after-school program at Jelleff is a DPR program. According to the DPR permitting priority, they should be #1 on the priority list.
And I’ll ask again-has BGC ever even asked or tried for permitting? How about Hardy? Do they need Jelleff during the school day for PE? Why does British school have it every day from 8-3. Does that take away from Hardy programming?

Which means Ellington should be brought up to usable shape ASAP.

That's not a sign of Maret privilege, but my privilege due to owning this website. You are free to post in this thread. You are not free to start multiple threads on the same topic. You can keep trying and I'll keep deleting them and then you can continue to wrongly blame Maret.
All well and good, but why didn’t you then just lock the thread? Why did you also delete any references to the deletion on this thread. Many of us want to give you the benefit of the doubt, but you appeared as to be trying to hide the fact that there ever had been such a thread on the private schools forum.

DCPS and DPR are the same city government. Who pays for what is accounting. Hardy is a public school. Maret, a private school for families that have opted out of city schools, is not entitled to jump to the front of the line for public resources. Hardy parents may be in a land grab, but that’s a negotiation with the other city and city sponsored entities that are competing for resources. Maret, per city rules, doesn’t even rank in the discussion. So they called in chits and skipped the line. Bad look, not getting any better no matter how defensive they get.
Who pays for what is accounting?? Spoken like a person who has never ventured into real work. If they were the same, why create two agencies instead of one? It's because they serve two different purposes. DPR serves in the best interest of the PUBLIC not entitled Hardy middle school parents.
Hardy is a PUBLIC school. Maybe they don’t win in a fair allocation, but we don’t know that because there hasn’t been one. Maret definitely doesn’t. And, yes, who pays for what is accounting. My kids go to a DCPS school where the playground is DPR. It works.
Oddly, Maret kept talking yesterday about how the city needs more public park space for all our children, as though DC has the same responsibility to provide capacity for Maret teams as it does public school teams. I just don’t get it. No other independent school seems to have this bizarre expectation.
That’s interesting to me, too. One of my kids is in private and one in public. Both schools have so many teams that they have problems scheduling practice and match times on their own fields, yet neither attempts to hijack other fields for its own use. Sometimes it does take holding some practices before school. At Wilson, for instance, boys varsity soccer regularly practices on the Wilson field at 6am. I suggest that Maret look into maximizing use of their own field by scheduling matches and practices before school.
Wilson uses Fort Reno, a DPR field, for baseball, soccer and tennis. Which is as it should be. It's right across the street. Which is really common, DC went on a building spree in the 1930's and built a bunch of schools, and many of them were put next to rec centers, the thinking was they were complementary facilities. Hardy is really an oddball, a DCPS school very close to two DPR facilities -- Jelleff and Guy Mason -- and it can't use either of them.
