This is obviously not a safety school. But I do wonder if a student who likes W&M would also like Emory.

No, it’s getting way less selective and on the decline.

Applications were up 23%, and SAT, ACT, Top 10% and average GPA all increased for Fall 2021.

+1. SCHEV reports that the 75th percentile enrolling last fall had a 4.46 and an ACT of 34. It’s become very difficult to get into.

Middle 50 SAT composite for Fall 2021 entering class is 1520 for 75th percentile and 1370 for 25th percentile. 1520 composite is the 99th percentile and 1370 is the 92nd percentile. Average GPA is 4.30. William and Mary doesn't get the high numbers of students applying as some other schools, but has a pretty strong applicant pool from a stat perspective. The numbers have probably gone up in part for 2021 because submitting standardized tests is optional.

Can you link to these stats? I tried to google for Class of 2025 and couldn’t find them.

This might be true is if you had SATs under 1300, but a GPA of 4.4. Then you'd have slightly better odds at UVA than WM (at least from my HS Naviance report). But neither would be a safety for you.

Don’t know why your Navisnce says that (is your high school sending athletes to UVA?) but SCHEV reports a 4.48 entering 75th percentile for UvA and 4.46 for W&M. I know a number of applicants, including legacies, who did not get k to UVA so went to W&M

Does legacy status matter for state schools?

Depends on the school. UVA and W&M both consider it a small plus.

And probably a larger plus if legacy status has been accompanied by sizable donations. . .

Actually it's a pattern across several Naviance profiles at different HS (I know because I've talked to friends and other people on DCUM have noted it)--and it is what Dean J. says about UVA admissions. At UVA the most important thing about getting in is high grades in rigorous courseloads. So if you had a lower SAT but high GPA you still have a shot. This appears on Naviance at my kid's HS as having a green checks in a long line above the 4.4 mark and mainly red x's below, but there are still a lot of green checks if you are below a 1300 on the SAT as long as you have that GPA. W&M has more a ratio of GPA and SAT--students can have a 3.8 GPA and a 1550 SAT and get in and 4.4 and 1250 SAT and not get in. The data comes mainly pre-pandemic though (3 years prior) so I don't know how it impact here.
