I did this in California mid 80’s. My brothers and I loved it.
As a teacher, 9 on and 3 off sounds amazing
As a teacher that travels every summer this is garbage.
I travel too but you can still travel, you just can actually travel at different times of year now!
Overseas travel for 4 weeks is rubbish. Keep the 8 weeks. Not all of us have families around the corner.
Oh look, another entitled Stay At Home Mom. Your 8 week summer vacation is not our problem.
Oh look, another failing parent trying to justify their weakling’s subpar behavior. My 8 week summer vacation is not your problem indeed. It’s my pleasure.

Oh even better. Now we can fully disqualify your remarks.
Summer 2020 was actually 12 weeks when they moved the start of the school year to after Labor Day.
I love being a teacher. When I see these posts I love it even more. I hope your kid is one of my failing students.
I was a NP that explained summer was actually 12 weeks (someone earlier had said 8 weeks). Not sure why you hope my kid was failing in your class? Just to be clear, my child is in AAP and makes just about straight 4s. We absolutely love our summer breaks and pool time. I supplement all summer. We don’t need or want year round school.
Summer THE SEASON is 12 weeks. Summer BREAK is not.
And when it comes to figuring out what needs to happen in education to help address any fallout of what the pandemic and our country’s non response causes kids to go through, the AAP summer travel and pool moms are not going to be the ones whose voices matter the most. As we’ve been saying all along, kids like yours are going to be fine no matter what. Any school scheduling changes will be made with the more vulnerable kids who did not fare as well in this scenario as kids like yours .... you know, all the ones these white moms keep using as leverage to try to get school buildings to open now for their kids who are doing perfectly fine.

Not over winter break (we celebrate Xmas as a religious holiday, so that’s not a great travel time for us) and 3. Not just spring break, when the prices of everything spikes.
Anything else honey? Maybe a side of fries with it?
The point of the original post is that year round school will provide travel opportunities when it is not stupid hot, like July and August, not around religious holidays, and at off peak travel times.
Breaks will be at the end of each quarter, which is different around the country. The two weeks off at the end of the first quarter should be nice weather for travel to places that can be silly hot and probably less busy because many schools will still be in session. The end of the second and third quarter would not be at Christmas or Easter time so travel prices would be less expensive and their would be different options, like ski vacations when there is more snow in January/February.
Overall travel costs would be less expensive, because breaks would be at a different time then most of the countries and less likely in peak times. There would still be camp options for kids, just like the Winter and Spring break camps that operate every year. Summer would be around 6 week break, plenty of time for overnight camps, travel, and time at the pool. Pools will do just fine, they would adjust their hours so that they were open after school, just like they do now at the beginning and end of the season. Swim practice might be after school but that is no different then any sport practice during the school year. Once the year is over, practices can move to the morning.
Kids would retain more information and there would be a lot less time spent reviewing material at the beginning of the year.
Do you think people would still be willing to pay? Wouldn’t this greatly reduce the hours available? How would pools be staffed if high schoolers are still busy with school and homework?
High School students would work after school just like they do at the beginning and end of the pool being open. And yes, people will still pay. I doubt that most families are using the pool as much as some here think. Our pool sells a pass for August only because so few members use it in August, Probably due to travel. So now it would be limited use because of school and Fewer hours open, because of school.
And I am far more concerned about my childs education then using the pool.

We still have the same amount of vacation. Kids can still do sleep away camps, swim teams, and international travel. Honestly don’t get why anyone would be against this. A long summer break is a holdover from agrarian times and doesn’t benefit children or working families.
