The school is scared that there will be a mass exodus of students- so they make it very hard administratively to get out. Also- the current acting HOS is apparently a control freak who instead of acting like a HOS is involved in many petty decisions, including employee disputes. My friend says- she is a power hungry annoyance. The teachers act as though they like her, but they don't trust her and fear her.

Anyone who deals with that woman eventually discovers how fake her sentimentality is and how quickly she is glad to wield the corporate axe when instructed.

They currently have 10 teaching and management jobs listed open, around 10-15% of the total. In past years, it was 2-4. The exodus of teachers is ramping up to match the students.

Thank you Admissions Director. How many kids is this? 15? 20? U.S. News doesn’t have any visibility into the mess that this school actually is.

Given the massive turnover, much of any success can not actually attributable to the school but rather its ability to attract parents based on the broader BASIS reputation. These are kids who would have done well anywhere.

The school just released this information publicly through their blog and a blast e-mail to all parents AND prospectives.

Should be a little over 30 students this year.

This class was always their best hope internally. They will need to leverage those results (which are very solid, no matter what anyone tells you) and bring in a fresh batch of 9th graders and start over again with the new HOS. With any luck, they should have a decent crop of hyper-advanced kids who don't get into TJ because of the improved admissions process and will be looking for a place where they can take a similar slate of AP course offerings, even if the STEM profile isn't as elite.

Agreed!! The change in TJ admission brings the lifeline for Basis McLean. Where else are these high performing kids that do not win lottery going to go? Particularly the Asian boys who will be discriminated if they stay in their neighborhood high school come to college admission time.

Sad that the school continues to need a “lifeline.” They have yet to capitalize on the many opportunities that they have had so far. If they don’t fix the core problems they will run out of lifelines before they right the ship. Seven HoSs (perm and interim) in 5 years and massive staff and student turnover cannot be swept under the carpet.

Exactly. The plan was to have 600-700 students going into this fall occupying the entire building with positive cash flow. Instead, they have half that amount, a new HOS coming, half the building still empty, and a reputation only as an AP grind factory.

Most startups don't get this much financial room to pile up losses. So maybe in year 9 or 10 they will hit their year 5 goal?

An endless money pit that serves the needs of a few.

So they all got into their safety schools, only 60% made it anywhere remotely elite, and a handful hit the top tier. Why is that exceptional among DC area privates?

Next year's senior class will also be noticeably smaller since their HS pipeline has really sprung a leak after this bunch. That's what happens when droves of 8th graders don't continue.

WTF? I am no defender of BIM, and would not send my kids there. But the scarcity mindset behind the bolded sentiment is so far removed from reality. Other than the self-fulfilling prophecy of brand name prestige, there is not nearly the gulf you seem to suppose there is between HYPS and the rest of the top 25-ish universities. NO ONE, not even in the DC area that is apparently saturated with near geniuses, should be disappointed over "only" going to Georgetown, Northwestern, Duke, Vanderbilt, Rice, or the top SLACs (where the emphasis is actually on teaching more than research). People who think like that baffle me.

It is a strong result (congrats to the kids, parents and teachers!) Not excepcional, though, and they need to improve. However, the results show that many of the super negative claims posted in this thread are exaggerations. The school has its issues, but the environment is conducive to hard work and focus. Not all kids adjust and the school does not cater to individual needs as it ideally should, but the place is a very good option for some. Out there there are no perfect schools. It is about leveraging the strong points and there are strong points in the community.

Whatever the numbers are, you can be sure that they will NEVER release or reveal them voluntarily. Sad.
