Is it sometimes harder to have kids in new and unfamiliar locations? Sure. Is it less of a vacation and more of a family trip? Definitely. But you know what isn't a vacation? Staying at home. We've traveled, including flying long distances, since our kids were little. Yes, there were times when they'd be crying in the car and we'd be wishing we could just turn around, but those moments were fleeting. Same as the moments when they were at home and crying and we were wishing it would just stop... Point is, nothing about kids is perfectly easy all the time, so you can either have your kids not sleep or cry or fuss at home, or you could do it somewhere else where all the other hours are more awesome than when you're at home. But I guess some of you will never get to experience that. How sad for you.
I feel sorry for people so small-minded they can't comprehend that not everyone is like them.
Vacations are not a sign of moral superiority. They're a hobby.
Please, my mom took me and my sister to India by herself in the 80s---people these days can't go to target these days without proclaiming what adversity they went through for picking up some unnecessary home decor with kids

it is pretty obvious the rest of the world has shown that it can continue to spin despite the birth of children.

Wow, you're really missing the boat here. You should get out more. Oh wait.
I mean, you're the one claiming that it's a huge personal failing to miss a summer vacation for a year or two. So entitled, so small-minded, so judgmental.

Babies need sleep like they need food. They don't need to be exposed to elaborate vacations, they need regularity and consistency. Any trips are for the parents not the kids. Once the smaller is out of nap age, then take a nice trip. In this case, I'd send dad and the older on their own.
Oh for the love...going on a trip to a house in another state is not elaborate.
