My kids say they have friends who vape or Juul, its something we talk about. I try to be very aware and so I'm wondering about something...
Over on the Tweens and Teens forum there is a whole thread discussing vaping and the fact that kids do it in class. Multiple people, teachers, parents, kids, are discussing this and saying that kids vap in class all the time.
I cannot even imagine how a kid in one of the area private schools, where some classes have as few as 6-8 students, and no classes have more than 15 or so, would be able to do this? Plus, these kids seem incredibly serious and intense about schoolwork and their classes. Im having a tough time imagining it taking place and I am hoping I am right about this.
So, my question is, is this just going on in classrooms just in the much larger public schools? Or does this also go on in area privates? Are any parents aware that their child has seen or sees classmates vaping in class? or in the bathroom during school hours? My kids say no way, not in their school(s) but I wondering if they are just unaware as the folks on the other thread are so certain this is going on in high school classrooms....

+1
But it is the girls that aren’t in the top 50% and definitely not involved in sports and school clubs. Just the ones whose parents are full pay and they are entitled nobodys with way too much time on their hands and want to look cool. Pretty sad and pathetic.

It is pretty rampant by grades 9-10 despite what your kids are telling you. I hate to break it to private school parents, but your kids aren't immune from these things. All kids with a smart phone know so much more than you can even imagine. And those who don't have one yet, hear/see about on their friend's phones. Also any kids with older sibs/cousins know about it. They also know about pot and drinking and many of them have at minimum tried it. Our high schooler switched from public to private this year and based on discussions, the private school kids lag about a year behind public so from our family's experiences, plenty of 8/9 graders have already vaped and have moved onto drinking and pot.
You are a bit cynical. All kids don’t do this. I was always in the popular crowd and I never did drugs. I drink here and there but that was it. All kids are not going to do drugs. Maybe your kid is doing drugs or maybe he is in a faster crowd but don’t assume everyone else’s kid is doing it. I know many kids in high school that are pretty straight. The are very focused on athletics and for them they don’t want to party like some of the other kids.
it’s the “popular” crowd at our private that does all this! They are some the best students and athletes, btw. Never thought my kid would do it either but guess what we recently found? I throw away everything I find and I’m limiting his money but it feels like a losing battle. And they only have to be 18 to buy it themselves, it’s easy to get.
Ha!! At our school, the "best students" are not vaping...sorry. And perhaps that is true of your school, but you are in a fantasy land. My 4.3 GPA 36 ACT kid has never vaped...but he has watched all the "dumb athletes" doing it.

They probably aren’t. There are hundreds of schools in this area and people assume that everyone is doing the same thing at every school. Some of the private schools are large enough to be public schools and some things maybe are happening there. There is one angry poster on here that is anti-private schools and loves coming on here and saying all sorts of things are happening in private schools. My son is at a different private school that is small and he also says no one in his Middle school class is doing this for sure at school and as far as he knows no one in his grade is doing it outside of school. These kids all talk and some have big mouths and he would know for sure if someone was doing it. People used to say everyone was smoking pot but I wasn’t and none of my friends were either and we were in the party crowd but just kept it to alcohol.

Anonymous wrote:My kid is in the upper school at Sidwell. Says so.many.people vape and some are actually now trying to get “un-hooked.” The school just did a big assembly to raise awareness and my son said some of the bigger users were asking questions that suggested they want to quit. I’m sure there is a smaller cohort of middle schoolers testing it out too. It’s a huge problem everywhere. He’s never seen it happen in class but says lots of kids bring their chargers to school and plug them right in.
