With a ridiculous number of names to choose from, Stuart won the most points. Change proponents are now arguing that a vote for Peace Valley (or Triggered Snowflake, or Braden Aust) is a vote for Barbara Rose Johns, but that is not necessarily the case.

Sounds like Ryan forgot that he voted in support of "Stuart"........
No. He voted in favor of getting rid of "J.E.B. Stuart" and allowing the community to decide whether "Stuart High School" without the initials was an acceptable "compromise" name.
It clearly isn't. Over 80% of the votes were against "Stuart High School." It would be ridiculous to make that the new name, and Ryan has correctly pointed that out.

If they end up choosing Stuart instead of JEB Stuart despite those results, it will be clear they really were just pretending to being open to changing the name, but really weren't.
Couldn't you say that about any of the choices?
Fact: Stuart got the most votes.
Fact: It is likely that many of the community in favor of keeping Jeb Stuart did not show up to vote. They had voted (and won) at the beginning of the process and been demonized.
I agree.
Then it's decided.

So the Board says they have voted to change the name, then disingenuously suggest Stuart is a name change, then they set up a voting process where they set forth 72 names and no run-off mechanism, and then they says the winner is Stuart with a third of the votes, a majority of the community has spoken. Sounds about right. I really don't care whether they change the name, but this who process shows the incompetence of our school board.

I move that the name of J.E.B Stuart High School be changed no later than the start of the 2019 School Year.
I further move that the Board direct staff to start the renaming process this fall and that as part of that process--in the spirit of compromise and in recognition of the need to minimize costs as well as the desire for continuity by alumni--staff request that the Stuart community consider “Stuart High School” as the new name.
The Board further directs staff to create a mechanism for private funding, with the expectation that private funding will pay for a substantial portion of the costs.
Motion by Sandra S Evans, second by Patricia Hynes.
Final Resolution: Motion Carries
Yes: Sandra S Evans, Dalia Palchik, Ryan McElveen, Karen Corbett Sanders - Vice Chair, Jane K Strauss - Chair, Ilryong Moon, Patricia Hynes
No: Tom Wilson, Elizabeth Schultz
Abstain: Megan McLaughlin, Tamara D Kaufax
And, now you expect them to change their minds once again? This motion passed. Stuart received the most votes. Why would they choose something else now?

They don't need to do a run off or to change the rules. The rules clearly say the voting is to provide potential names to the board and is not binding. The board has the final say. They can therefore consider the type of names that garnered the most votes and pick a name based on that.
Anonymous wrote:Well, we'll see how the board interprets the votes. Given the number of votes for Marshall and Johns combined, I think it'd be disingenuous to say most of the voters wanted Stuart. The board decided not to have a run-off vote with the top two choices so there could be a clear majority. This mess is on them.
Evans and Hynes started this mess and probably have done more damage to the community than necessary. They started with a predetermined outcome, and tried to manipulate the system to achieve that outcome.
Had they just said from the beginning that they were going to change the name, they would have ticked people off but it would have been over. Instead, they tried to make it look like the community desired the change. The majority did not desire the change. Now, they have given Braband a mess to clean up.
Dollars to doughnuts, they change the rules again and have a run off because the results were not what they desired. And, to those saying it should be Johns or Marshall (two poor choices for reasons other than the people those names represent), the majority also did not support those names.
Anonymous wrote:Anonymous wrote:Oy vey! I don't know what is with these people. Seriously.... Stuart is not an option, really. And there is no way Marshall can happen. BJHS (Johns HS) is a disaster as well.
The school board has never shown much good judgment to date... so I don't have a lot of faith in how this will be resolved.
I'm really surprised Seven Corners or Skyline didn't get more votes. It looks like the direct school community didn't care about changing the name. Seems those most motivated to show up today were those opposed to the change altogether.
Let's see how they spin this data into a decent name.
I thought PMS (Poe Middle School) was bad enough.
FCPS would be the laughingstock of the nation to name a school BJHS.
