Do you really stare down every Penn State grad wearing the t shirt that you see? Bc how do you get anything else done? There are a LOT of them in this area - second only to Philadelphia, I think. The Clarendon to Ballston corridor seems full of young grads wearing the gear - esp during football season.


Dp. Actually, the gear has been MUCH less obvious over the past few years. But the grads are there, yes. It's like a high achievement for them to get a govt job that tops out at a GS-14

Prior to the never ending atrocity was exposed I have sympathy. After the whole mess of an institution was exposed only and idiot would choose to go there when there are countless superior options.

When they rioted over Joe pa being fired and put "we love you joe" on their bellies and vigils it didn't say much for the education level of the school. The football program which is more of important than the school by any measure, is a mediocre program with an atrocity at its core. The football program has long been populated by dummies who can't figure out how to handle decades of kiddy rape in the showers without checking with their Joe pa .

I view it as any other state flagship (except the national ones like Mich; UVA etc.). I get why you go there if you're from Pa. -- often the cheapest option. But I cannot for the life of me fathom why anyone goes there out of state - it's simply not THAT great of a school to pay OOS tuition for even if you are rich; nor is it a school that is throwing money to attract OOS candidates - like Alabama was/is.

It's middle of the road academically. Much of the school's popularity stems from its football team not academic side. I don't hold the football team child molestation issue against any PSU graduate although I am amazed at the number of Penn State fans who turn a blind eye to the issue. It's almost cult like for some Penn State fans in their denial of its existence and ability to act like nothing happened and that to me is scary.

I was admitted to Ivy league schools but PSU was the better value. I don't regret my decision. There are actually benefits to being a scholar at a party school. Lots of opportunities to work with professors. They're very open to students who are interested in their field. Not snobby.

Went to NYU for grad school and that was NOT a good value.

None of them would lift a finger to defend the university conduct in connection with the Sandusky/Paterno scandal, and in fact they have other complaints with some of the departmental bureaucracy there. But they have good things to say about the academics, and my friend who is a biology professor there is a fantastic teacher and individual.
