I'd think posting your list on this thread is tantamount to asking for opinions. And I'd also assume that they give their full list, but maybe they don't. It just seems pointless to list schools that are absolutely impossible to get in OOB, even if the list has less than 12 and it doesn't cost anything. And what if the PP isn't aware it's impossible? Maybe pointing it out to them will prompt them to add some schools that can actually serve as backups to their IB? You'd be surprised to see how many people play the lottery without even understanding the basics of it.

AppleTree LP is great - most of DC classmates stayed for PK4.
Teachers, principal and resources all go to the little ones so more like a private preschool. Teachers always hugging kids - lots of music and dancing, very supportive.

How is CMI 10 minutes from Garrison boundary? Have you looked at TR4, Lee or Bruce Monroe? (You say language, but ITS and CMI aren't language schools).

We're on the Northeast edge of the boundary. CMI is about a 9-10 minute drive. TR and Lee are over 15 minutes in morning traffic. The Spanish schools we liked within our radius were prioritized over CMI and ITS. Monroe fell out for a reason that I don't want to dig into here.

Two Rivers is quite a bit further away, but Lee is literally 30 seconds from ITS, just FYI.

Why can't Lee boosters understand that there are some people that don't want to go to Lee? It is not a personal attack on your or your choice. Let it go please.

Huh? WTF are you talking about? I live by both schools and drive past both of them daily. I couldn't care less whether people do or don't want to go to Lee or ITS but they are very close. Two rivers, while a great school is much further away. How is proximity to ITS boosting?

Because PP clarified several posts ago that she didn't choose Lee due to Montessori and people are still arguing about how many tenths of a mile away Lee is and why isn't she choosing it.

You will end up with a 50% chance of daycare with this list. Have you considered Langley as a safety? You are wasting CHML and 2R4 at that ranking. I know there are kids from Brookland in my DD's class at Langley.

OP here -- Langley isn't a school I've heard much about but I appreciate the rec and will do some research! I take it you are happy there?

Yes, we are happy there. DD's teacher is excellent and has kept her challenged, and she has peers on her level and several BFFs. The principal is new but doing well. It is a smallish school, which I like, in a very roomy and nice historic building. The school seems to be at the beginning of the standard gentrification process from preschool up, so test scores are pretty bad, but the preschool is fine. We are lotterying selectively and expect to stay next year. It is not 100% certain that you would get in OOB, but it's definitely possible. I think it's a hidden gem.

You definitely don't have any safeties. I'd list your inbound. Based on the last year or two (which I know doesn't always reflect the future, yadda yadda), CMI, TR4 and CHML all have significantly longer waitlists than Breakthrough would. Those could be considered "wasted spots" on your list. List schools in your true preference, which it seems like you have, but if you don't feel passionate about any of those three, including commute (which I agree is a huge consideration), consider replacing those with Burroughs/Bunker/Noyes/Langley/WEDJ

If you want Montessori / DCI feeder -- why is Inspired #3?

OP here-- an outlier. It's both easy on my commute, comes highly recommended from colleagues with kids there, and at the open house I just really loved the facilities and classrooms--I felt like my child would be happy in the space. So more of a gut feeling that moved it up the chain.

DP. If anyone sounds unhinged, it's you. And why does it matter that PP is IB for Eaton? The question whether it makes sense to list schools that don't take anyone OOB for Pre-K is still a valid one. Even if they did, she'd get into Eaton before she got into any of the ones she listed below, because she'd need a stellar lottery number to snatch an improbable OOB spot. So yeah, I'd wonder if there was any thought behind this list.

NP. You sound unhinged. I know lottery season can be stressful. It's ok. Chill and have a glass of wine. You asked a rhetorical question (like "what are you thinking?"). Fact is, you could have asked clarifying questions. Fwiw, our lottery list looks almost identical. We are at a HRCS that we LOVE but may move WOTP soon so decided to play a free lottery ticket (knowing it will be a dud). No harm, no foul.

Funny that PP came back to say she was IB for Eaton afterall so un-hinged's berating and unsolicited "advice" was for nothing. All she has to do from the start was ask a clarifying question like "are you IB to any of those?"

DP. If anyone sounds unhinged, it's you. And why does it matter that PP is IB for Eaton? The question whether it makes sense to list schools that don't take anyone OOB for Pre-K is still a valid one. Even if they did, she'd get into Eaton before she got into any of the ones she listed below, because she'd need a stellar lottery number to snatch an improbable OOB spot. So yeah, I'd wonder if there was any thought behind this list.

And LAMB, maybe Bethune as a safety. We've yet to see CMI or Lee so they may make it onto the list, likely bumping Haynes. We really like our current day care situation so other than cost we don't have any concerns staying there.

Strictly for commuting purposes, I'd drop Shepherd as it's in the opposite direction and doesn't offer Spanish immersion - as you seem willing to do non-immersion, might as well make it convenient. Maybe add Bruce Monroe for another immersion option? But without an amazing number, I think you will be hard-pressed to get in to any immersion programs OOB.

That Deal feeder, though. But you're right. The commute would suck.

Commute to TR4 would be worse as it's nowhere near on the way to downtown. Depending on where you are in sweat zone, Shepherd doesn't seem like much more of a n add to commute than Bancroft for instance. So if you're going to take 16th south anyway, is it that much more to go north a mile against traffics then back down south a mile? Just a thought as you're looking to go 1-4 miles out of your way with other schools.

TR4 actually isn't much out of the way because my office is near judiciary square and actually will be moving to NOMA in 2-3 years.

Ah that makes sense. When people say downtown, I automatically assume 18/K.
