OP, why did you ask if it would be okay for her to miss the time from an unpaid internship if you weren't okay with hearing "no"?

Op here. Yes I posted in haste. The vacation planning happened in jan. Before the application which was in feb and the illness started up hard in February. She knows what happens if she misses a day of school -- making it up just makes things worse. So she went to school many days pretty ragged. Our first thought was leave her home. But when the time came she was worse. I am not going into what she has. So at the last minute I knew what had to happen -- regardless of consequences.
The originating agency said missed days were fine and so did her job. Additionally she can use her computer while in bed. So it's what she did It would have been much better if she could have been there in person. But really the computer aspect IS the project.

Actually I think that most people would agree that mentioning the week long vacation at the time of the offer would have been advisable. For some reason it wasn't mentioned but maybe the Op's daughter has found an acceptable way around that through telecommuting (?) I guess a lot depends on exactly what type of an internship this is.

When I hire an intern (mine are paid) i tell them how long the position is for. I don't expect to find out later that they will be missing 10% of the time for vacation. Obviously illness or emergencies are different.

OP is having trouble keeping up with whether her daughter is doing an internship, missing a week for a long planned "family vacation," missing a meeting, taking a few days off to telecommute from bed at her grandmother's, having a part time job, having an internship that expects "time off," and having a large online following

OP, I'm sorry your DD has a chronic illness, but at this point it is difficult to believe much you have to say. It was poor planning on your part if you wanted her to miss a week of her internship for the family vacation. Accepting a competitive internship means accepting the responsibility of ALL the internship -- especially if others were willing to commit to the entire length.

If she's sick, that is something different. Others have asked what the mystery ailment is and whether a doctor recommended the time off. Is this the case? Then you could have phrased it differently and I'm sure most people would have been quite sympathetic to her situation.

You've changed your story so many times, it no longer makes sense.

A long planned family vacation =/= telecommuting from grandmother's.

Best thing to get from an internship is a great letter of recommendation. Good luck on that.

Now she's telecommuting for a competitive internship which "expects time off" while at grandmother's? I'm really sorry for the 74 kids who didn't get the internship.
