I just read The Outsiders for the first time--somehow I missed that one while in school--and while it does not fit the OP's criteria for no violence, it was a quick but thought-provoking read. Currently, I am about 2/3 through Francisco Cantu's The Line Becomes A River. Again, not fitting OP's criteria, but I highly recommend it in the midst of our current political climate.

Speaking of Curtis Sittenfeld, I'm reading Sisterland right now and loving it. It's really good.

This is my favorite of hers too! I also like Beautiful Day, A Summer Affair, and The Beach Club.

Anybody read The Perfect Couple by Elin Hildebrand yet? I loved it. My other favorite by her is The Blue Bistro, but seriously all her books are good.

The second half flips all your preconceptions about the characters. You need to make it to that part.

In the past 2 years I have liked:
Little Fires Everywhere
Eleanor Oliphant is completely fine (although this one was almost too upsetting)
Man Called Ove

And a few more I’ll have to look up!
