It was never really clear to me how long Marigold had been with the Drewe's. Because she had been with the Swiss family for a while too, right? They made some comment about poor Mrs. so and so, but how she was able to adopt another child. (And if anyone read the recent story about Swiss work farms for children, makes you glad to get Marigold out of there. It wasn't all chocolate and cuckoo clocks, apparently, in pre-war Switzerland.)

Honestly, I'm not sure how much it would really affect Marigold. If I got hit by a bus on the way home today, my 4 year old would be upset for a little while, but if I was replaced by a loving mother, I bet it would have no long term impact on her.

And, keep in mind that this was a long time before "In the Best Interests of the Child" was written...no one really thought in those terms back then, so we can't really expect Edith to. They used to put orphans on trains and put them up for auction at train stops along the way.
