Well it made the front page of every national news page yesterday and some even today. So obviously there are a lot of people who give a shit. Maybe it will bring out all the other wrongs of MCPS. Would love for those to go national too. Worst school system ever.
Good grief. No, MCPS is not the worst school system ever.

My daughter goes to a private school and they recognize every holiday on their school calendar (including the Eids) but they don't give off for any religious holidays. No Yom Kippur, No Easter Monday. Their Spring Break is after 3rd marking period every year. If they celebrate a religious holiday, they are excused absences with guaranteed no tests/homwork only. Many of the kids represent their holidays at the prior morning meeting. It is a shame our public schools can not be so tolerant. Don't ignore, don't give off, but excuse and embrace. Maybe there would be a lot less bigotry and fighting.
I'm guessing they give off for Christmas.
But, in any case, the religious holidays were not on the calendar because MCPS was observing the religious holidays. The religious holidays were on the calendar as explanations for the days off. MCPS has some of those days off (Christmas Eve, Christmas, Good Friday, Easter Monday) because of state law. And MCPS has others of those days off (Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur) because they believe that so many MCPS teachers will be absent and require subs that it makes more sense to not have school on those days.

A change was made-yet they are still not pleased with the outcome. Next they will want times set aside to pray, and the school gym floor the designated prayer area, and a loud "bullhorn" to call to prayer! We cannot make a concession in a "public" school for every person who wants one-I am sure there are private school options to accomodate their requests!

Nah - they don't care about other religions. I'm sure they are happy now that they got the Jewish and Christian holidays wiped off the calendar.
I am an AMERICAN Muslim and MCPS teacher. As an American who believes in democracy and free speech, I believe that the Muslim community had every right to advocate for the day off even though I never supported the idea. The community NEVER asked for the other holidays to be removed from the calendar. That was a decision made by the Board of Education NOT supported by the Muslim community.
MCPS Muslim parent here. I agree with the teacher. No one wanted the religious names removed from the calebdar . That was never the issue.
Also, I'd love to see some numbers of predicted absences county wide for each religion. I would accept whatever threshold MCPS imposes on being disruptive.
And the hate on this thread makes me nauseated. In an AMERICAN, a mom, a doctor in this community, and I'm a Muslim.
NP here. Please rest assured the actual number of anti-Muslim posters on this thread is undoubtedly very small and is in no way representative of the DCUM majority. We are all one human family.
Yeah-let's hear you say that when they build a low income housing project in your Whitman neighborhood or bus a "boatload" of newly arrived, illegal hispanic kids to Churchill, or better yet build a Gaza area resettlement/refugee center in Chevy Chase.......we are all one "human" family allright!

But Why did the MCPS board make those changes? not because a bunch of "progressive "PC" moms wanted to be "all inclusive"??? not because MCPOS though it would be a good idea. It was to shut up a bunch of vocal arrogant people (muslim Students in this case) and to put a lid on the "pot of shit" they were stirring (and likely to avoid a lawsuit).
