Open floor plans are IDEAL! for people who do not cook. Otherwise all that greasy
hot air travels everywhere. In the past it was happily contained in a kitchen, with the cabinets
mostly affected by the yucky thin film of oil that one had to periodically clean. Now it is less of
a problem, the hot oil mist is happily traveling all the way through the open areas making
everything equally yucky.

I agree that this is better than the totally open floorpans which is basically just a giant room with some cabinets. I really hate those.
Agree those are terrible. It doesn't matter how powerful your hood is; the cooking smell will get everywhere. On top of that, the more powerful the range hood, the louder it probably is, which is not something you want to hear when you are trying to watch tv or have a conversation with someone.

I agree that this is better than the totally open floorpans which is basically just a giant room with some cabinets. I really hate those.

There is a happy medium of sort of open floor plan flow with sectioning off of rooms by partial openings/large archways, without completely sectioning off the kitchen down a hallway, through a small door.

The kitchen is a functional space with messy dishes, splatters, etc. It doesn't make for the best ambience for entertaining, IMO. I don't like that everyone can see how messy the kitchen is when I host Thanksgiving, or watch me struggle/smell that I've burned the gravy. I prefer large kitchens with walls.

I would only want an open floor plan like is found in the new farmhouse/mcmansion/craftsman homes. Honestly, I love them.

Yes. Open floor plans are a trend like grey and words as artwork. Anything trendy is usually eventually adopted in extremes by the middle class. So instead of having one wall torn down, they get rid of ALL of them.

I have an open floor plan on the main level only. My first time living in one. Overall, I like it a lot more than the older homes I’ve lived in when the houses have that “circular” shape where the dining room, living room, and kitchen sort of revolve around the central HVAC.
I think if my entire house was like that, I would be a happy camper. Sometimes it’s too much but if you have separate rooms, there’s nothing wrong with it at all.

Get a proper hood and smell problem solved. If you want privacy, go to your bedroom or office or maybe the basement would suit you best, as you obviously hate light. Not sure why you need to be so angry anyway. I love open floor plans and don't care that you don't. Just get a house that does not have one.

Someone should tell The Property Brothers.
Property Brothers will catch up eventually. Give them time. Those things need a little time to catch up. It starts with few people working the courage to be honest and stop praising something they don't like.

I despise open floor plans and couldn’t care less about tons of light. If I want bright light, I’ll go outside. I do not want to wear sunglasses in my house, nor do I want my $5,000+ sofa to smell like halibut or bacon without a separate kitchen area.
