17:01 I think you have to look at it in two levels. The first is personal - some people are just too f'ed up to see you for who you are and that's on them, not you. If they can't accept you without you going through this arduous test, you need to let it go. You don't have to have every black person see you as okay.
The other level is structural and my sense is that AAs in this society do have to be more cautious around some white people - so maybe the people you're referring to have been burned in the past and have been hurt by racist assumptions. They may be assholes but the fact still is that the playing field is still not level. White professionals still have their way smoothed for them that Black professionals do not.
But still, if you're doing your best to be a responsible member of society you have to let this go and not expect that everyone is going to accept you for who you are.

He benefited from being cared and provided for by a white family without having the influence of family members who are descendants of slaves and that legacy. And given the time he went to school and graduated, he was probably also the beneficiary of affirmative action to increase diversity in schools and work.
Wow...your POV is incredibly racist. If anything, he benefitted from growing up in a state where racism was not largely present (because whites were not a large percentage of the population). Your assumption that blacks poison the minds of their children and that somehow that is the problem and not actual racism is incredibly insulting.
Ivy league schools are not in the business of handing out acceptances and/or accolades on the basis of race alone. The idea that you think affirmative action, and not intellectual prowess, is the reason is even more insulting.
And I guess you know that affirmative action benefits white women the most, right? Right?
Did not mean that blacks poison the minds of their children. Just that your upbringing and environment greatly influences who you are. So, yes, if you experience growing up around older family members who knew former slaves, lived through segregation and lived a lifetime of discrimination and inequality, your outlook and expectations would be very different than someone who did not experience that.
And as for affirmative action, in today's world where more blacks are going to college and there is more competition than when he went to school and graduated, he might have not gone to Ivy League schools or ended up summering at BigLaw despite his intelligence.

This sounds like it's more your issue than AA women. You need to work on being more secure in your decisions and less worried about what someone is thinking/saying. In actuality, you have no idea if your perceptions are real or imagined.
I think the PP's perceptions are real. Definitely think that they have been "testing" her.
I think they are real because I will get a sanity check from my other AA Friends and they will confirm, oh she's really sensitive, you can not be real with her, etc.
Also, especially at work, they will go to somebody and "vouch" for me. She is one of the good ones don't be like that to her.
I am not a sensitive person. So for 20 year I have have said to myself, okay, I don't understand what they have had to go through and I am not going to scare off that easy. I think most people are just going to walk away from that situation.
We need to come together not push each other away. I care but I am getting old and have less energy.
But I know the right thing to do is to be companionate.
Again, this sounds like an insecurity issue. Because of some issues with black folks at work, you have attributed this behavior to other blacks and wonder if they similarly question you.

It seems that education and assimilation have assisted in enhancing your quality of life. If these things have benefited you, why would you not encourage others both black and white to take similar paths to success??
You are right!!! I miss spoke about #6. You want to be responsible for those close to you and not others to whom you have no connection. And for all I know maybe you really do have cramps.
