Not a teacher myself, but it really bothers me when people make the gross jokes about teachers leaving work at 3 p.m. Such an insult to all of the hard work that they do. You may say you're joking, but it seems like a lot of people are really ignorant and think that teachers stop working as soon as the children leave school for the day. People complain about the education system, but treat it like a joke instead of constructively contributing to improve it. Maybe if we as a society really valued the education of our children and demonstrated that by refraining from unfunny "jokes" about the effort teachers put into it and showed the profession the esteem it deserves we would see 1) higher caliber of college graduates willing to go into teaching and 2)actual public support (both in attitude and finances) towards our public schools. Most of the people on this board are the product of higher education and are taking the time to brag about their accomplishments, but seem to forget that their education helped to land them where they are now.

Yes, but tuition was a fraction then, and so was housing. Cost of attendance is over $200k anywhere good, and many crap schools too.
I'm 38, went almost straight through, and made over 100k in 1999. Starting salary for a first year associate in DC was 125k in 2000.
