Back for Christmas! After hosting houseguests for Thanksgiving and cooking all of the dinners completely from scratch while my mother insisted we have the thermostat at 74 and the gas kitchen fireplace running at all times, we are doing JUST appetizers all day on Christmas. Granted they are frozen so the oven will still be on all day, but at least I can hang out in a totally different room near a cracked window. Like a weirdo.

Heat at 78 or 79? That’s stifling. I’s refuse to go over, or at most for an hour if it’s a holiday.

Can we bump this for Christmas 2025?
I want to know if my house is weird.
I bought a new trashcan and towels for the guest bath and I have lots of food in and an open kitchen.

We bought air mattress to sleep on for the office that use as bedroom when visit- has worked great for years. Couple weeks ago told great news! office is now an actual bedroom- put bed in it. Just arrived…. The bed is a day bed from converted crib and they put in a love seat sofa in same room so not enough floor space to use mattress. We'll be doing a quiet run for sleeping bags under guise of getting more ice!

Is it possible they’re actually trying to discourage guests from sleeping over?

It’s crazy to me that grown adults would go through the subterfuge of sneaking out to buy sleeping bags and spend multiple nights sleeping on the floor rather than just getting a hotel room.

DP. My ILs live in a rural area - nearest motel is 35 minute drive. There are 3 air BnBs within reasonable distance. One is great, but usually booked up. One was absolutely disgusting- we left an hour after arriving. First clue was muddy boot prints in the kitchen, then dirty dishes left in the oven, then looked under the comforter to see small pubic like hairs all over the pillow and sheets. The third pace is very basic, lacked sufficient heating (they had it set to like 62 and controlled so it could not be adjusted) and was not worth the $300 per night cost.
One year they tried renting a camper to fit my family but their home could not power it, and the camper had ants.
Another year they rented us a cabin at a nearby state park, but it had no heat, which is not good in cold weather.

Are you not from the DMV? A 35 minute drive is an everyday occurrence for me.
