Currently finishing his first semester at Georgia Tech Engineering. Deferred does not mean rejected. So, don't lose hope.

Can you share stats for your child? Did he or she apply to any of them in the ED round?

whoops forgot GaTech their #1 choice
No JHU? It’s highly ranked for BME.
I think Tech caught her eye in particular because she has a friend there who's very happy.
My DS is a Freshman at GaTech this year and absolutely loves it! Engineering major as well.
Same here. DD is a first year and GT was her #2 choice (after MIT LOL) and she is happy to very happy depending on the day so far.

MD (MCPS) magnet student
1590 SAT, 14 AP+ classes, 4.9/5.0 WGPA (top 5% at worst), great reccs, good essays/ECs
MechE major on applications
Reach:
MIT - deferred EA / rejected RD
NW - waitlist RD
Duke - denied RD
Target:
GT - deferred EA / accepted RD
CMU - denied RD
Michigan - waitlisted EA
Safety:
UMD - accepted EA Honors + $20K
VT - waitlisted EA / accepted RD (LOL)
Purdue - accepted EA
Pitt - accepted EA $80K
Georgia Tech is an absolutely outstanding result for a kid applying to engineering. So are Maryland and Purdue. Clearly a bright kid.
Agree. Bet they would have gotten into NW or Duke if ED-ed there but UMd or GT is a better result for the money. No need to spend all that money on NU or Duke, given those other options. Congrats!

Cornell (reach)
Hopkins (reach)
CMU (low reach)
UMD in-state (target)

Attending UMD with honors and merit. Accepted at VT, WL at CMU, and rejected from Cornell & Hopkins.
He applied as engineering, undecided. If the university required a specific major within eng, I'm not sure what he put.
Very helpful, thanks! Can you share grade and score, and what kind of high school? And which you applied EA/Ed if any?

I'm surprised that UMD is a "target." It's pretty competitive, even for top students.
I'm surprised that you're surprised. Compared to the reach schools listed, it absolutely is a target.
My nephew in state MD was rejected UMD-but accepted VT
I know several high stat engineering kids who were rejected in state UMD but accepted to reaches. UMD was brutal for our public school last year.
